There is serious potential in Smith-Levin's first outing, about a psychopath who is murdering young, pretty, successful black women in a Massachusetts town. Her heroine, homicide detective lieutenant Starletta Duvall, is a gutsy 15-year police-force veteran and the daughter of a cop as well. As an African American woman in a position of authority, she's got to hold her own in the men's-room atmosphere of the station?which she does?without losing her sense of self?which she doesn't. At least until the brutal killings begin. The description and gutsy dialogue are excellent, and the narrative is that of a good procedural until the very end, when Smith-Levin introduces an unnecessary twist and also abandons the various important personal relationships. Still, this is a very good start to what promises to be an exciting series.

GREAT BOOK TO HAVE IN YOUR LIBRARY TO GO PLAY ANY TIME YOU WANT. I HAVE ALL OF THE STARLETTA DUVALL BOOKS AND ALL OF THEM ARE GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!Do Not Go Gently (Starletta Duvall Mysteries)
I also became intrigued by the very strong bond shared between Duvall and Paresi, which leads the reader to speculate that something more than friendship exists, and that a relationship is bound to develop someday. One senses that there is more there than is indicated. My question is, why are these two people not together romantically? They're the most intriguing noncouple I've come across in some time. I really liked having the author tease us with this ambiguous relationship.
If I'm not mistakened, this book is the first in the series of Starletta Duvall novels. And, I plan to go through each and every one of them.
-book is well-written, in that it was easy to follow and the characters stayed true all of the way through.
Now, the negatives:
-the ending has such a plot twist that you might as well have had Darth Vader or Charles Manson committing all of the murders - there were as many clues pointing to them as there were to the killer. Really, this comes so far out of left field that no one will see it coming - and I felt like I was the victim of some bad practical joke.
-The killer's motive is so bizarre and he has gone to such lengths to follow through with his plan that one would think that he would have actually ended up in an asylum long before he is sprung upon the reader as the Surprise! real killer.
-EVERY character is constantly thinking about sex - it seems that it's all they talk about and all they think about. It's a wonder the murder got solved.
I understand that this is the first of a series - I will not be reading the rest. My copy of this book will quickly be finding its way to a used book store.
I love this book so much I can read it again. I love the way this author writes. This book will make you think twice when you meet someone. The only person who might have had a slight chance in escaping this mandman was,Denis. But, she was too drunk and too....to think. This book was also full of humor. There was not one boring moment. It was hard to put this book down. As I was reading this book,I kept saying to myself. It was worth the wait. I plan on reading all three of her books.
Judith Smith Levin you've got a new fan.
