Editorial Reviews

Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead, guitarist Charlie Hunter's new duo recording with drummer Scott Amendola, is an album that's easy to get behind. A complete departure from last year's Public Domain - a true solo album - and the previous year's Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid - which incorporated two trombones and trumpet into Hunter's instrumental arsenal - Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead is Hunter's first recording of original compositions in three years. It's also, perhaps, his most candid and forthright set of songs ever. Recorded with Hunter and Amendola playing in the same room simultaneously - an old-school recording method that has been virtually lost in today's cut-and-paste world - Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead was written by Hunter while at home, inspired by his touring. "I love the nooks and crannies of the U.S., and this album is for the people living in these places."

"Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead" demonstrates how Charlie Hunter continues to be one of the most interesting guitar players of our time. To say nothing of his unique improvisational technique, Hunter is constantly covering new musical ground whether it's reggae, rock, electronic music or jazz. While his discography has a balance of hits and misses, Hunter is always interesting. Unlike some of his more ambitious efforts, "Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead" is back to basics, straight up rock. Much like the "Duo" album cut with Leon Parker, this is another guitar and drums project. So while it doesn't break any new ground, it reminds us that Charlie Hunter isn't so full of big ideas as to forget about the basics of great groove. This duo sounds fantastic. Given the guitar work, it sounds like a full group. Indeed, the title track showcases Hunter's ability to play a great bass line on his seven string guitar. One of the hottest, orgiastic solos is played on 'There Used To Be A Nightclub There.' 'Rust Belt' is funky with a capitol 'F.' The overall vibe is chill. There are a few rockin' tunes that cook but most of the songs walk in a relaxed tempo. Following the current evolution in Hunter's sound, those Hammond B-3 style chords are almost totally absent. The emphasis here is on rock with a bluesy feel. Amendola and Hunter play well together. At times, Scott Amendola's chops are tight enough to make him sound like a co-author. Not all of the tunes are winners; the slower material is less compelling. That written, one of the album's strengths is the production. Unlike on the "Duo" album, the mix here is perfect. While it may not be essential, this is a recommended project. Listen to Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola to find out why "Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead."

Renowned guitarist/composer Charlie Hunter's new duo recording with drummer Scott Amendola, is an album that's easy to get behind. A complete departure from his last two albums, Not Getting behind Is The New Getting Ahead is Hunter's first recording of original compositions in three years. Hunter explains that their intention was to tell stories around the central theme of the album's title. Hunter says, "The new tunes are meant to evoke some of the things you might see in your travels through the USA these days. Scott and I wanted to think of each composition as a starting point for some kind of narrative."

"The album's ten tracks were recorded with both Hunter and Amendola playing in the same room simultaneously, with no headphones, and there's no mixing, editing, or overdubs. Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead was recorded straight to two-track analog 1/4-inch tape by lauded sound engineer Dave McNair." - JamBase

Serious gelling happening between everyone. Charlie brings some sick country-fried flavor to his irreverent jazz chops. Scott's keeps everything moving with the perfect swagger and urgency for each moment. Hope they tour!

I have almost all this guy's albums, have seen him live a few times, I have sat very close to the stage to watch and listen-- and i still don't know how he does it!!! Guitar and bass at the same time, without compromising the sound or skill level of either. Crazy! He just keeps on going with his thang-- every new album seems like a whole different approach, with sometimes horns or keys, but in this case and every other case, the drummer he works with is simply killer. Re-inventing his style and sound constantly, a true jazz man, and there aren't too many of those around these days. Complexity and simplicity dance together. This album is very good, kind of a mellow tone, with Amendola, who i know as nels Cline's drummer-- i would very much like to see a collaboration htere-- Hunter, Cline and Amendola! Whoa.
