Editorial Reviews

Review

"...not your average quick-read romance, but a book to be read at leisure so as to enjoy every moment...It touches you...and forces the reader to face many truths; that we have no control over our lives, no matter how hard we try. What makes the difference though, is how we deal with it." Ellen Fritz - Books4Tomorrow

"Not To Us is an astonishing story with many unexpected twists and turns. It is about one woman's wishes, discovering the strength she didn't know she possessed, forgiveness and understanding, but most importantly, learning to love herself..." Cheles Bells - A Belle's Tales

"...From the first chapter, Ms. Owen hooked me with her characters and I was rooting for them through the whole story. One twist after another, you'll think that you know what's coming but...you won't." Elena Aitken - author of Nothing Stays In Vegas

From the Author

One husband, one boy, one girl, two cats, and the ashes of one golden retriever who was loved well. Friends and family that are a bit on the dysfunctional side tends to lend to my active imagination quite nicely, providing me with concrete examples for my fiction. I spent a long while in high tech sales and spent money like Evian water and racked up useless stock options. In pursuit of a long-held dream, I gave up the high tech corporate life and now devote myself to writing fiction full-time. I write love stories that tend to be edgy and dark and #Iwillmakeyoucry. If you're not offended by the gentle sprinkling of swear words at what are 'necessary junctures', we're bound to be best friends. This way to my world: katherineowen(dot)net. xoxo KO

The good part: I finished it in one sitting, a few hours at the most. The bad part: I will talk about it in the rest of the review. The premise of the book is a story about two couples Ellie and Robert (bobby? ugh!!) and Carrie and Michael. Michael has always been in love with Ellie. Robert and Carrie get together and needless to say this leads to trouble in paradise. Ellie is then diagnosed with breast cancer and now Michael and she are together. Umm..why? She suddenly realises she always loved him too?. This part was a bit rushed. Then Ellie gets pregnant and still battling cancer. Then a turn of fate leads Michael back to Carrie, Ellie leaves on a plane (umm abandoning her two young children ? anyone?)and meets Court Chandler (what kind of a name is that for the awesomest character in the book?). They "fall in love" BUT to make a long story short she comes back to Michael and now they have to deal with both their infidelities and cancer and birth of their twins. I felt like the author was writing 5 stories and then decided to merge them together. Let's see there is infidelity, cancer, death of children, falling in love, cancer and pregnancy? It felt like it was too much!!! I mean are you kidding me???? Anyways, it all ends well. Also, the shoddy treatment of the kids is unacceptable, what parent just shuttles their children off to someone else for pretty much the entire book? So...back to the good part? It kept me entertained for a couple of hours, I just wanted to see what more could be added to the story?

I recieved a complimentary copy of the book for an honest review.

Katherine Owen creates a heartfelt story of a young woman stuggling with not only with her husband's infidelity but also with a tragic diagnosis of breast cancer. We watch as her main character not only learns to deal with these hardships in her life but to prevail and find happiness in the end. This story is perfect in length and Katherine does a beautiful job of helping us fall in love with all her characters.
I look forward to more novels written by Katherine Owen in the near future!!

I'm not even sure where to start with this review. First I will say that I gave this story 4 stars because of the writing and not the storyline. I cannot and will not degrade a story just because the content is off my morality chart or out of my comfort zone, that is not why I read books. I read books to stretch my mind and explore different views of romance. Enough with my rant on to why I gave this story and author 4 stars....

Ellie is this strong woman that just gets hit with a whole lot of LIFE!!! Heartbreak and struggles, love and loss, endings and beginnings, Ellen Kay goes through it all and this roller coaster of a journey is not easy to read at times. I wanted to smack her through the book and then other times just wanted to cry with her struggles and heartbreak. Through it all (if you complete the book) I learned that life can suck, it can be hard, we all make mistakes, and no one is perfect. I appreciate Ellie's journey and even though this is a work of fiction so many aspects of this story could be real life. Live life to the fullest because you never know what the next moment will bring you.

I'm not sure what I expected when I started this book but Wow! From the very first chapter I could not believe the scene that was unfolding next. The story is written from Ellie's POV and immediately in chapter one Ellie is given devastating news about her health and she divulges info about her husband. Immediately you see how twisted and heartbreaking the relationship is between Ellie & her husband Bobby and how a series of events will change their lives, their three children's lives and their best friends (Carrie & Michael).

********SPOILER*************

I have never been so emotionally invested in a book that has 4 adults that cannot make the best decision for their family. To see how Ellie moves on and accepts that her husband has been having an affair with her best friend Carrie after being told that she has breast cancer to falling in love with Carrie's husband Michael and finding out that she is pregnant! Every time I turned the page I was not sure of what would happen next! The book would make you feel that Ellie & Michael were safe and could finally start their life and BAM tragedy would strike again! It wasn't until Ellie gave birth that she was diagnosed as depressed that you received the feeling of peace about her character!

This book was mind blowing and I kept saying who would actually do this, why is this happening, please give her a break but it was the best emotional roller coaster that I have been on since I read the series of Tally & Linc (the Truth about Air & Water)!
Loved this book and now I am going to read the next one from this author!

A well written novel, written in present tense, which I love. With Ellie's life unraveling, she becomes a true to life character. When faced with betrayal and illness, I found myself cheering Ellie on throughout. Look forward to reading Katherine Owen's other works.

From the first chapter, Ms. Owen hooked me with her characters and I was rooting for them through the whole story. One twist after another, you'll think that you know what's coming but...you won't.
Ms. Owen had me cheering and crying along with the cast and I continually returned to the book to see what was going to happen next.
A lovely heartfelt story that explored some very real fears for every woman. Well done. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Owen.
