Not Open: Win The Invisible Spiritual Culture War Paperback – December 3, 2013

4.4 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT

In our effort to be open, tolerant, relevant, nonjudgmental, accepted, and to "fit in" there are now very few differences between those that call themselves Disciples of Christ and the ones they are called to impact. We have been told as Christians that we must be open and more tolerant and not judge. The subtle erosion of compromised truth has overtaken and diluted our lives to be weak and powerless like the culture that surrounds us.

Not Open is a clarion call for us as Christians to live the full, satisfying, and most joyous life that comes from walking with and reflecting Jesus Christ. May we be open only to the things that God has placed before us and not bow to the subtle, almost undetectable compromises that have infiltrated our land, homes, and churches from the carnal culture in which we live. Not Open will help you detect the areas of compromise that culture has so cleverly woven into our lives and challenge you to live the powerful, life altering, and undiluted life that has been planned for you and your family through living and reflecting the truth of Jesus Christ and God's Word.

Not Open: Win The Invisible Spiritual Culture War addresses the real war taking place in our world. The war that is robbing the minds of this generation and is now far reaching to touch the next.

We are experiencing a cultural invasion today in many areas of our lives that could change our lives, our families and that of our nation. "Not Open" is a call to action that goes beyond just stating we have a problem or posting comments on social media;it actually is a manual for those who will heed it's message and step out in faith to make a difference. Some one said "you can make a difference, when you decide to be the difference" and that is what this book is about. I warn you; it is not for the "faint-hearted" as stated by the authors. This is a roll up your sleeves, put on your boots and get to work type of book. If you want to restore hope in your life and your family's, I recommend this book. I have known the authors for almost 20 years, and you will realize in reading this, that their sense of urgency comes across like "Orders from Headquarters!" Now is the time!

I hesitated to write this review because there is much to be said for the old adage, "If you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all." I know I could sit down with Lisa Cherry and never run out of things to talk about and we would have a great time and find much common ground. As a homeschool group leader, I appreciate Lisa for her work in raising awareness of abuse within the homeschooling community. Having been a member of a POTTS group for 3 years, this is the third book I've read by this family and this one just missed the mark.

I consider myself an activist in the culture war so this theme has great value to me; however, I found it alarmist and manipulative with ample use of all caps and exclamation points for added impact. Just look at some of the titles on these Amazon reviews and you will find such charged words as DESPARATE, SCARY, URGENT. That pretty much sums up the tone of the book. If you are a Christian and you are somehow unaware that American culture is drifting away from Christian values, you must have been in a coma for 50 years. The culture war is nothing new. We've been in a steady cultural decline for half a century.

This book would like you to believe that we have recently fallen off a cliff (there is actually an illustration of this cliff on the author's website) and doomsday looms for all but the `Not Open Remnant' just as in the days of Noah. Unfortunately, this type of alarmism is nothing new and it has led many lemmings right over a cliff of another sort altogether. The cult cliff. I don't think the Cherrys have set out to be cult leaders but this book is a good start on an unintentional cult franchise that they have followed up with a subscription service known as Project 7000, an effort to mobilize and equip the remnant. This Project 7000 hook illustrates the issues I have with the whole concept: "The time is urgent. The changes are massive. Friends falling away from God. Moral Shifting. Scriptures being redefined. Like Noah and his family, we are in a flood, but right now God is equipping His remnant to stand. Is that you?"

The first eight chapters of this book were a constant barrage on my intellect as they came at me with one bad excuse for logic after the next. I actually wrote 17 pages of review refuting the first 8 chapters alone. They followed up this insult on my intelligence with 20 chapters of offense to my faith attempting to make the case Biblically that we should all be fearful, judgmental haters. Here is just one example of the poor exegesis which attempts the lead the reader to some very wrong conclusions: "Do not judge others unless you are also willing to be judged yourself is an implied meaning of (Matthew 7) verse one. Should I as a believer want to be judged? It surely would be helpful if my unholy actions were corrected before they caused damage." I don't think the intent of Matthew 7:1 is to lead us to believe we should judge others because we want to be judged yet that is exactly the case the author attempts to make.

For these reasons among others, I give this book a single star.

As a Bible believing Christian, this book really hits home and challenges the believer to be all that we’re called to be in this world. Lisa and Lucas are upfront and tackle many controversial issues that we face in today’s culture. Their insight is eye opening and stirs the reader to become a part of the “not open” remnant. Their words are genuine and I believe they are straight from the heart of God. God placed this message and vision for this book on their hearts, and because they allowed themselves to be transparent, it touches the reader and ministers to their spirit. Lisa and Lucas challenge believers to speak the truth in love, no matter what the cost, to give up on compromise, and rely on truth.

We should be so in love with our Savior that we are willing to sacrifice it all and ultimately live a life truly blessed by complete surrender. We are to be the vessels God can use to bring His children the light. After reading this book, it changed my perspective in many ways, and my mind always goes back to three questions: How many people am I going to take with me when this world has passed? Did I live my life courageously and totally dependent on Christ, increasing His kingdom by being bold? Am I willing to say NO to compromise and YES to truth?

I encourage every believer to read this book and then pass it on to a friend. Let the words speak to your spirit and allow the truth of what God has called us to do be the basis of your walk with Christ.

This book will open your eyes to how we as Christians are conforming to this world, adjusting our values, and not standing up and being the Christians that God wants us to be.

As a parent, grandparent, and even a great-grandparent it saddens my heart to listen to my teenage grandchildren. Watching their actions and listening to them talk I realize the changes that have transpired since I was young. It is time that we stand up for the values that were instilled in us when we were growing up. It is time to take back valuable ground that we have allowed to be taken from us and this book is one that tells us how to do this. The approval of God far outweighs the approval of my peers.

The ruler of the world will no longer be the ruler of my life. I want to be part of the " The Remnant"-- the treasured part left at the end. Will you read this book and join with us and take part in the "NOT OPEN" movement and help us win the invisible spiritual culture war.

5.0 out of 5 stars A call to really follow Jesus.......

If you've ever wondered WHY the church just can't seem to achieve victory, this book is for you.

If you've ever been frustrated when your friends and family just don't understand WHY you're frustrated with the church, this book is for you.

If you are ready to have the Holy Spirit challenge you into living differently, this book is for you.

If you are bored with church, and ready ( or not) to WAKE UP into really following Jesus, this book is for you.

Lisa Cherry, and her son, Lucas, paint a clear picture of what our lives should look like if we are really following Christ, and not our self-made "gods" of sex, comfort, self, etc. As followers of Jesus, we will NOT fit into our culture, but rather go against it in every way.

Lisa writes the main part of each chapter, with her 20-something son, Lucas finishing the chapter by giving his Millennial generation perspective on the same subject; sharing his own struggles and Biblical solutions to the same issue. Well-written and an easy-to-read format. References are clearly marked.
The subject matter in this book is so foreign to even our mainstream church culture, that you may need more than one read-through to grasp the full concept of the author's meaning. This book is NOT a "light read before bedtime". Be prepared to be challenged and provoked.
