Writing style: poor to medium
Catherine happens upon a smuggling ring and is targeted as a witness. Bertie rescues her and though at first she thinks he might have been the one to try and kill her, she is drawn to him.
Not only do Catherine and Bertie have to discover the identity of the smugglers but before they can be together, they have to navigate her arrogant brother, an ex-fiancé and Bertie’s lower social status.
They plot is decent, the author abides most of the social norms of the time, and the barriers to their love are believable. The reason I can’t give it more stars is that the pacing is slow and the writing too passive.
Frankly, I was bored and wanted to hurry through the book. The author TELLS more than she SHOWS. The word “was” occurred with too much frequency and the author belabored topics like gardening and Egypt instead of moving the story along.
