4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

In 1977 Nancy-Ann Feren discovered a lifelong love of national parks and camping when she spent a week at Acadia National Park in Maine with her two young sons and her husband, Dick. Since then, Nancy-Ann and Dick have explored all the sites in the National Park System, enjoying the history and nature, roasting marshmallows under the stars, and sleeping soundly each night in their two-person tent. This delightful book chronicles 40 years of their memorable adventures in the parks and preserves.

Nancy-Ann Feren grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire where she still lives. She received her BA degree from Wellesley College in 1968 and her Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of New Hampshire in 1975. She is a retired 5th grade teacher. She and her husband, Dick, have three adult children and five grandchildren.

When Nancy-Ann was teaching she developed a unit on the national parks which incorporated reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and art. One former student commented that he found a love for geography and a respect for our environment from this project.

Nancy-Ann loves spending time with her family, baking cookies, reading, walking, camping, and traveling. She and her husband have visited 416 sites in the National Park System. Beginning with their first cross-country trip in 1980, everyone in the family began keeping a journal of each trip. Nancy-Ann used these journals to write "Not Your Average Travelers: 40 Years of Adventures in All the U.S. National Parks". Their adventures include many not-so-average experiences such as being awakened by a bear in the tree above their tent, canoeing through mangrove swamps, staying with a native family in American Samoa, and visiting sites in remote parts of Alaska which are only accessible by bush plane.
