Extremely popular in Japan, where it originated, the Eggling is made of white porous ceramic (2.125" height x 1.875" diameter) and comes with a terra cotta tray and seed pack of either herbs or flowers. This product is a total disappointment. Purchased several for hostess gifts for the holidays, and after talking to the recepients, not a single one sprouted. I have emailed the company, and hope I get a satisfactory response. DO NOT ORDER.

I bought this with high hopes of being able to grow a plant for my younger cousin. I am a gardner myself so I was pretty excited. However the plant NEVER grew no matter what I did. To me it was a waste of money time and resources. DO NOT BUY. Get a plant from a florist or even from Home Depot- it'll be better than this piece of crap.

Choose this rating because it never grew. Was a novel idea but definately would not recomment it to anyone. Very disappointed in this product.

Defied all odds! Despite what a majority of reviewers say, this does actually work! HOWEVER, I agree with one reviewer and to use a zip-lock bag as a makeshift greenhouse. Keep it heavily moistened, and leave it on a window sill that has a lot of sun exposure. If too much steam builds in the bag, lift off for a few hours and replace when it's cooled down. Given a little time, little sprouts will grow!

Update: 5/17/15 Still growing strong ♥

Was this toy fun... Well not really since nothing grew out of it. If an egg full of dirt is your thing then you're all set.
Educational value... This might confuse kids with the whole chick and the egg thing.
It's an Egg.. It's not durable.

Over all the concept is neat. Great present for someone who likes plants and eggs, but the execution sucks. I'm getting Sea Monkey's next time.

Our daughters gave us a basil eggling for Christmas! We thought it was so cute that my husband and i had to buy some as New Years gifts for our friends. So even after reading all of the 'do not buy, doesn't grow' reviews, we bought eight egglings because it made a cute gift giving gift! Our eggling sprouted, here is what we did...At first I just watered it everyday to keep that top paper wet, then after about ten days I decided it needed to keep warm, so I put it in a ziplock Baggie! After a few days in the hothouse Baggie it started sprouting! Now I have baby basil!🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

Notice that the only 5 star review is from someone who has never actually tried to grow one? lol
I bought several plants for my daughter for Easter this year on Amazon. The Wee Enchanted Garden, Tickle-Me Plants, and this Eggling (despite the bad reviews.)

The little garden is doing marvelously, the Tickle-Me plants are all growing and thriving...and I have an egg with dirt in it on the counter.

Cute idea, but total waste of money. :(

Was hoping for some home-grown strawberries this summer but I guess that's what Strawberry Farms are for.

In theory this concept is really cute and should be very easy. Crack egg, water egg, sun egg and then plant egg w/sprouts to final resting place. I didn't expect the final resting place to be the trash can.

Not only did the Eggling not sprout, but the additional seeds they included (for "added success" according to the instructions) did not sprout.

Don't waste your money on this product.
