Editorial Reviews

An Idea Film. A Bookumentary.
A cinematic treatment of a worldview. A poet live in concert. A motion picture sermon. VH1 Storytellers meets Planet Earth. 60 Minutes meets Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. In this unusual but fascinating film sequence, best-selling author N.D. Wilson gives an emotional and intellectual tour of life in this world and the final chapter that is death. Everything before and after and in between is a series of miracles--some of which are encouraging, others disturbing and uncomfortable.

N.D. Wilson's love for the world that God has spoken comes through with the best kind of authenticity. This compelling film revels in Wilson's contention that "you can learn more from an anthill than from Heidegger". He is not afraid to raise the biggest of questions, and more importantly, to answer them, not just with speculations from a book filled room, but in the context of a life lived inside God's story. Wilson is no slouch as a thinker, but having stepped outside into a wild world, he fills out life's questions with answers that touch the whole person, head, heart, and hand. This is philosophy for real people: not dumbed down, but fleshed out. This world, and all of our experiences in it, are part of a story that is being told, and instead of grumbling about your lines, Wilson invites the viewer to meet the world with gratitude, because the story God is telling is a good one.

Awesome. I don't normally review anything on here but since this is new and I know how heavily I rely on the ratings on Amazon for purchasing decisions I just have to get this out there. You will not be disappointed. Wilson hits heavy on a topic that I love from John Piper (who got it from CS Lewis) which Piper calls "The wakening wonder of what's really there." So buy this and start to wake up.

This film is able to awe me when I'm complacent, confront me when I'm bored, and challenge me when I'm not asking the hard questions. It--scenes, discussions, people, humor and sorrow, settings, insects, you name it--is beautiful.

Inspiring. That's what N.D. Wilson's Notes from the Tilt-A-Whirl is. This is not just the book read aloud (although there is a bit of that), but it takes the ideas and feelings of the book and puts it into video format. I loved the book and wished my kids would read it, but knew there was little chance of that happening. After all, this wasn't Leepike Ridge of 100 Cupboards. But, I put this DVD in, and even though the kids knew it was a 'bookumentary', they didn't leave the room. My 14 year old son said, "Wow, mom, this is actually pretty good!"

Here's to a good start of a new genre: the bookumentary. A narrative walk through N.D. Wilson's Notes from the Tilt-a-Whirl, this film captures the glory and impossibility of the created world, and the gratitude and laughter that we should respond with--all in under an hour. The scope of the spoken world is obviously enormous so anticipate quick sketches and fat brush strokes, "important" philosophers accounted for and swept aside, and a ride that feels a bit like the name. Get ready to tilt and whirl.

I shared this with hundreds of students at our fall events and every time it blew their minds. I then suggested to groups that they buy a copy and go through it chapter by chapter using the study guide that can be downloaded. Seeing the whole thing gives one the big picture but is also like drinking from a fire hose.

What I really love about "Notes..." is that it is an exciting way to approach world views - a subject that many students don't understand well at all. It raises and responds to questions that most Christian teens do not think about but need to. It is intellectual, emotional, humorous, and exhilarating all at once... and solidly biblical.

The book is good, and the bookumentary is just icing on the cake. By which I mean it is sweet, flashy, and if you're not careful, gets everywhere.

N. D. Wilson's take on life, the universe, and everything is somewhat unique. Like a carnie, he introduces us to a world of flashing lights and moving parts, with a heap of bizarreness on every side. In under an hour he brings us through questions about God, the afterlife, and the problem of evil.

It is his treatment of the problem of evil that makes the whole thing worth watching. He takes us from grit and guts to fluffy kittens and every place in between, pulling no punches. If you want real answers, you have to look under every rock, and he does. Join him in his journey. Don't just ask the questions, find the answers. Watch it, read it, watch it again. It's worth every penny.

I enjoyed this dvd a lot. It's a good reminder not to take anything for granted & to give thanks and appreciate all of those things we do tend to take for granted. I hate getting into complacency mode, even if it is in our human nature to do so. Thanks, Nate, for reminding us so brilliantly!
