Nothing Left to Mend is a very dark tale about a mill-town in Pennsylvania where tragedy strikes pitting the Union against the Mill, family against family and friend against friend. New Sherriff Glenn Dempster must find the truth in the literal ashes of the mill’s breakout explosion and faces danger and hatred at every turn.
This story is incredibly interesting and very entertaining. I found myself on the “edge of my seat” throughout. Glenn is a good guy in a bad situation and you want him to win! I cheered for him and actually caught myself once exclaiming—OUT LOUD—“Glenn, don’t fall for that”, when the bad guy tried to manipulate him.
Glenn’s daughter, Heather, is a smart kid with an enormous well of courage to draw from; she’s a true heroine.
And, the “bad guys” are truly bad…and yet, human with motivations that are genuinely selfless. They just make bad decisions in their quest for justice.
I truly enjoyed this STORY. I did not enjoy the book.
Here’s what I mean. This book needed AT LEAST one more trip through editing. There were many, many instances of just plain typing errors; unfinished words, extra words in a sentence and occasionally extra punctuation as if the author edited out a string of words but forgot to edit out the punctuation; In other words, I could tell when he had a change of mind in the middle of a sentence and went back and edited leaving things behind. There were spelling errors too, and many times the author went between third person point-of-view and first person p-o-v in one paragraph—sometimes in one sentence. These things were INCREDIBLY distracting and pulled me out of the story. For a writer, that’s a huge no-no. Another round (or two) of editing could have prevented this.
However, OVERALL, I liked NOTHING LEFT TO MEND a great deal.
