"From Nothing is a well-crafted, multilayered work of fiction that is all too real. Greedy CEOs. Conniving investment bankers. Spineless boards of directors. Powerless employees. But it's deeper than that. It's a brilliant story of life's choices; career or true love, loyalty or betrayal, honesty or dishonesty, morals or money, stagnation or innovation. It's about beliefs in fate or free will, in God or Godlessness. It puts raw talent on a pedestal yet makes it clear that talent can only go as far as luck decides. This isn't just a novel. Goldstein, the artist, has woven a tapestry of life. Read it deep."

The book took me out of my comfort zone. In a positive way.
I might have kept some of the descriptions and internal monologues shorter, that is why I gave one star less.
Some of the repetition of those monologues were questionable while reading, but in the end, I understood their necessity. I will not spoil it for you by saying why. :) If the description intrigues you; then I suggest you read the whole book and not only the part available in the free sample There are many surprises there.
The story’s hero, Victor Selo, is complicated, damaged (physically and emotionally), loveable and hate-able, musician and visionary, and I became his fan. Growing up in the foster care system, the music Victor listened to was his inner solace and shelter as he withdrew inside himself. Later in life, the tunes and particularly the lyrics of rock classics would become his source of strength and sanity. As he matured from boy to man music became Victor’s gift and drove him towards the creative and satisfying life he wanted but internally doesn’t believe he deserves.
Just like most talented musicians who can’t sustain a livable income playing gigs, Victor developed other skills to find a good paying day job. Victor’s interest, aptitude, and knowledge of technology, combined with his music background landed him a plum position as VP, Product Management at Global Harmonics, a silicon valley based tech company. His professional techno-life crashes dramatically and left Victor the opportunity for redemption through an almost impossible set of risks and choices.
Filled with characters, locations and settings from the seedy to the sublime, “From Nothing” leads the reader through a powerfully vivid tour of events and revelations that will surprise you as it surprised me. I was moved by the depth of emotion and heart in the story as well.
“From Nothing” is nothing short of an exciting techno-thriller with a killer soundtrack. It’s a novel that plays like your all-time favorite song. Ken Goldstein has written a hit and that you will want in your mix.
But Selo’s admirable traits and best intentions may not be enough to save Global Harmonics, the company behind the successful music database application he conceived, from a very unfriendly takeover. The cold-hearted, calculating individuals behind the acquisition could give a damn about the tremendous reinvention opportunity at hand or the employees’ lives that would be disrupted should the deal close as planned. These are not nice people, and to quote the O’Jays it’s all about money, money, money, money … mon-ey.
From Nothing takes us along for a wild journey as our all too human central character arrives at an angst-provoking yet seductive fork in life’s road. One path could lead to a rewarding and beneficial corporate triumph (or financial ruin & even physical peril), the other to his greatest rock and roll fantasy come true (or not). Whichever path he chooses may well result in something or … nothing.
It is a stirring tale of Victor Selo’s self-appraisal, courage, conviction, and faith as he searches for truth about the present and future while seeking redemption from a past full of abandonment and questionable choices that continue to haunt him. Our hero’s emotional and psychic wrestling match is the stuff that great rock songs are made of. Quite appropriately, Goldstein skillfully weaves poignant classic rock lyrics into the narrative. This both amplifies the storyline and is sure to ignite pangs of nostalgia among its readers. It certainly did for yours truly. And in the end, I wholeheartedly recommend that you add From Nothing to your playlist of must-reads and by all means sing along.
