BUT, at 75%, the book switches gears. Grace becomes something (don't want to give spoilers) that IMO didn't really match the first 75% of the book. The one love scene I found a little sappy & a touch crude. Then the main characters fall into a dangerous situation which I thought a little melodramatic. So not only did I feel the last 25% didn't really match the first 75% I didn't like it as well. Then the Epilogue was nice until it left an unanswered question, never like that ploy. So needless to say it went from a 5 star story down to a 3 so I rated it a 4
Trevor is a hero that had aligned with a secretive organization that kept the land and lives of so many safe. Trevor wanted to never have a passing thought for another woman when his fiancé so carelessly threw him aside but Grace is everything he could hope with a tender heart for all others regardless of stature. Trevor chooses to settle in the property next to Grace and her father knowing that he may have more than one glimpse of her beauty every day. Trevor works his house and land learning all too quickly that the entire village needs the same care to their homes. The properties have been neglected when so many were lost to the ravages of war and the crops were not able to produce.
Trevor loses his anger, Grace finds someone to help her be cared for, neighbors are taught to hope in the future, and everyone that threatens this life style are taught to respect the newly elected constable.
With each book, Gaelen Foley shows the depth of her brilliance with a story that entertains as well as teaches readers about the life and times of those that came before us
I loved Grace, I have seen where other reviewers found her "too good", but I liked that about her, she was not perfect, but she was a good person with a beautiful heart. She also had moments, where I as the reader wasn't sure if she would be able to forgive the hero his past, but she proved what a loving, caring person she really was, that it wasn't just words, she grew as a person in this book. I think what I really liked about her was that she was not one of those - I don't need anyone, I am woman hear me roar type of heroines that are so prevalent in HR books these days. I don't mind a strong woman, but sometimes it just gets to be a little over the top. And Grace was strong, but she didn't act like she was an island and she didn't need constant saving because she thought she knew better than everyone else.
I think this might be my favorite book in the series so far. I have enjoyed every single title in this series and I cannot wait for Nick's book
Lord Trevor Montgomery, has decided to give up the spy business. He is a bit jaded and when he sees the innate goodness in heroine Grace, he moves into the estate next to her and her father's home.
Grace in some ways overshadows the hero in this story. She is depicted as kind, thoughtful, caring, understanding, all the traits a vicar's daughter should have but she is also stubborn and self-righteousness. She comes across that way in her dealings with the hero and she is sure he is a rogue out to corrupt the provincial neighbors in her village.
Trevor is long suffering with Grace who ridiculously feels she must manage everyone's life in the village to include Trevor's. Honestly where does she get the energy. I just never warmed up to this heroine and her romance with Trevor is not overly exciting.
