Wilson D. Miscamble, C.S.C. is well known within the University of Notre Dame's global community as the unofficial leader of the "loyal opposition" to Our Lady's University two-decade slide towards secularization. Recent decisions - an invitation to President Obama (the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history) to speak at commencement, the appointment of a pro-abortion benefactor to the board of trustees, the Vagina Monologues - damaged the school's distinct place in American higher education to gain short term popularity...popularity with those who care the least about the school.

The author notes that University President, John Jenkins C.S.C., lacks a `true north' and has failed to double down on Notre Dame's Catholic mission, yielding instead to pressure to conform to the reigning secular education model. He notes, "there are already plenty of schools were intellect has managed to detach itself from morality - places like Princeton were professor Peter Singer's finger holds endowed chair and yet thinks it's okay to kill babies. Is this the model we want to conform to or imitate?"

Miscamble loves Notre Dame and with others, believes important things have gone wrong there - especially with regard to faculty hiring. He points out "that a sizable group of faculty mainly hired in the 1970s and 80s, who operate behind the cover of seeking Notre Dame's academic advancement, work to reduce the meaning of Notre Dame's Catholic identity. They imply that Notre Dame's Catholicism is an obstacle to the University from realizing its full academic potential." The superior tone of this group shows a deep anti-Catholic disposition."

"For Notre Dame" is a collection of articles, talks, and columns that constitute Fr.

Great collection of essays with insights into current controversies that will shape the direction of Catholic higher education (and therefore Catholic culture) for years to come. Miscamble writes with clarity and a depth of vision that comes from years of engagement with the topic. It's a hopeful sign that Notre Dame has such committed and thoughtful scholars devoted to advancing its highest interests.

This is really an odd book and I am having a hard time getting into it. The objective is unclear. The author clearly has an axe to grind with the administration at the university which is fine, but needs to get a grip. Things change and we have to manage the change. The author has his agenda, but I think the book is missing something that wants you to keep reading. Who am I to be a critic of someone else views. Glad I didn't spend much on it.
