From the Inside Flap
“It’s not about dieting, cutting calories, carbohydrates, caffeine, or cabernet. It is about learning about yourself, compassionately reconnecting with your feelings, and allowing raised awareness to naturally shift you toward greater balance overall. You can achieve this balance through delicious recipes, and the implications are universal.”
—from the preface
So many people are obsessed with dieting, but the ways in which they go about getting “healthy” are not ideal. Instead of suggesting that you fast or deny yourself, Marci Izard presents a new perspective on how to approach food and address bad eating habits.
Izard categorizes recipes based on how they make you feel—refreshed, peaceful, comforted, treated, or indulged. The purpose of this system is to make you more aware of how food affects you. Once you are tuned in to the connection between your spiritual and physical wellness, you naturally make healthier and more balanced choices.
In this book, Izard explains how to organically improve the way you eat and live. Her mindful approach to food induces a positive eating experience, in which your meal choices enrich your emotional state.
Marci Izard writes a food blog on the Houston Chronicle Web site called Marci’s Table, where she shares delicious recipes that fit with her healthy food philosophy. She also hosts Feel Good Food, a cooking segment on CW39 in Houston and CW33 in Dallas. She has a background in broadcast journalism and has served as a news anchor or reporter in Texas, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
Izard is a yoga teacher at YogaOne Studios and a group fitness instructor at The Next Level Fitness, both in Houston, Texas. She also promotes spiritual wellness and mental stability as a meditation coach. She enjoys running and has participated in three marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2013. Izard’s love of fitness balances her passion for food and wine.
From the Back Cover
“This cookbook is so colorfully infused with the essence of what food should be about—eating with intention and attention. Nourishing Your Whole Self: A Cookbook with Feelings helps you tune in, so you can feed your mind, body, and soul through mindful eating.”
—Sonia Baghdady, Emmy Award-winning TV news anchor
Combining Taoist dietary principles with spiritual practice and personal reflection, cookbook author Marci Izard has created a food philosophy designed around a person’s emotional responses. By exploring how food makes you feel, you can better understand your own dining impulses and yourself.
The connection between what you eat and how it makes you feel is a universal one, but in order to gain balance and joy in your life, you must acknowledge the relationship and make choices accordingly. Once you become the master of your culinary wellness, you can maintain balance by selecting recipes that support your overall spiritual health.

It was fantastic and our dinner party guests were fans. We made the Tex-Mex Chicken Soup with the Banana Bread. We also made the Kale Salad and they were all great.
This book is beautifully presented. Every recipe has a delicious photo and an inspiring quote. The recipes are easy, practical, and delicious, and the mindfulness concept is seamlessly woven through.
I think one thing that really makes this book stand out from other cookbooks is that the author is a yoga and meditation teacher. While it may sound like a small difference (versus being a professional chef), the recipes all follow the same thing of living well, eating healthy and enjoying what you taste. This flow comes across in her recipes and her presentation, and it makes the results much better.
It's refreshing to have nutritious and healthy recipes that we're actually excited to eat.
Buy a copy; you won't be disappointed!
