To be honest, I ended up choosing this one because it was $100 cheaper and came with a very nice chuck which saved me another $160 dollars. So far I am happy with this lathe. The hardest part was getting used to a smaller lathe in general. I primarily turn bowls, and a 12" swing is very limiting for this, but that's to be expected. It seems to have plenty of power even if the motor is a bit smaller than the others and overall fit and finish is nice. The belt access is awesome and the speed range is incredible. Also the reverse function is very nice to have.
A few things I don't really like:
The adjustable feet. I don't use them, instead, I mounted the lathe on a heavy workbench. this wasn't the easiest thing to do since the holes near the headstock are nearly inaccessible from the top.
The location of the variable speed knob. When I'm hollowing out a bowl, my hip sometimes turns the switch, faster or slower. As long as I'm aware of it there is no issue though.
For the price, no other Midi/Mini Lathe can touch this. It's a great lathe at a great price. For smaller woodturning projects the Nova Comet II will work very nicely in your shop.
I have had . This lathe two months and some issues have popped up. The tailstock quill threads have begun to bind up-- it is hard to put any pressure on the workpiece, so i will need to have that replaced.
The low speed paired with the motor would seem very powerful, but because of the small pulley on the motor there is always belt slippage in the 9-12 inch diameter range. All other speeds and diameters work very well.
I won't be sending the lathe back, I like it, but it is not without issues.
Its dead. The motor died mid spin tonight, and I am without a lathe. I am within two years but the motor warranty is only for one. Reduced to one star.
I mounted the new lathe on the stand which I had also purchased and it ran like a dream-no vibration-no noise! I have only had time to turn a few items and I am completely satisfied with both the lathe and the great customer service. I can certainly recommend both Teknatool International and Amazon!
