Product Description

Novation Launchkey (MK2) is the quickest and easiest way to produce and perform electronic music using Ableton Live. You just plug in via USB and the keys, faders, knobs, and velocity-sensitive RGB pads give you immediate hands-on control of your session view, instruments, effects and mixer. Launch clips, control FX, play beats and much more using 16 pads laid out in two rows of eight, to match your Ableton Live session view; one row to launch clips, and one row to stop them. Full color RGB LEDs mean they'll match the color of your clips too, while velocity-sensitivity lets you really put some feeling into your beats. Launchkey is designed to let you shape your sound however you like. Use eight rock solid rotary knobs to tweak your instruments and effects, and nine dedicated faders for hands-on control of your mixer. The 49-note synth-style keyboard is lightweight, fast and very easy to play, but also velocity-sensitive so you can create truly expressive performances. All the controls integrate seamlessly and immediately with Ableton Live, and can be reassigned to anything. Of course, if you do not use Ableton, it will map to other major music software using In Control. Launchkey 49 is tough enough to take and use anywhere. It will work the moment you plug it into your laptop and you won’t need any drivers or power cables, because it’s class compliant and bus-powered via USB. Launchkey comes with absolutely everything you need to start making music: Ableton Live Lite, Novation Bass Station and V-Station virtual instruments, plus a comprehensive 4GB collection of production-ready samples from world-leading sample store Loopmasters.

Great value
Very cool controller, the only other controller I have owned is a kx88 which is tiers above this price range so I'll be gentle.Light weight, I'd be comfortable hiking with this thing on my back. kx88 breaks my back to move it across the house.Key action, this is why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. I learned on a vintage upright piano and then the kx88 weighted action keys so I know what keys are supposed to feel like and this leaves me wanting slightly. I try to take into account I bought this brand new and the drum rack buttons and key springs are all more rigid than they will be when I break it in a little better.Would I buy it again? probably so. The features I haven't touched on are what make this particular controller so valuable. 'in control' buttons. So I bought a stand for it that includes a laptop rack from griffin which is badass, but I could get away without having the pc so close because the in control buttons communicate seamlessly with ableton live so that you can navigate and record with out having the grab a mouse and find your cursor and move it over. I plan on producing large quantities of tracks for movies and tv with this rig so this makes it much more streamlined.Novation, if you sold a weighted model I would have bought it in 61 keys. My next purchase will be to get that acoustic piano key action back in my life.

Overall, I really like this MIDI controller. I am just dipping my toe into music creation, so having access to a program like Ableton with an easy enough to figure out controller is nice. Overall, there are a couple things I like and don't like.

Pros:
- My 49 key is great for it's range of keys without being big enough that it needs dedicated space.
- The controller is run with just one cable, so transportation is easy.
- The keys are somewhat sensitive to velocity. There isn't really soft touch/soft sound, but if you strike the keys more aggressively, you can get a louder tone.
- The controller really does interact easily with Ableton.

Cons:
- The keys aren't that sensitive to velocities. Louder is all good, but softer is left wanting.
- The keys aren't weighted (I wasn't really expecting them to be, but my roommate has a real piano so I am getting spoiled).
- Along the lines of not being able to play softer, there is only one accessory port. I have a two pedal accessory so I can sustain, but I can't dampen the sound.

If there is a Novation employee checking this, I do have a few questions:
1) I am looking for another MIDI, nothing is wrong with mine, even after a year in a half, but I want a 25 key that is easier to carry around. Between the normal 25 key and the mini, what is the better option for carrying the controller around with me? I know the setup of the normal one, but is the mini compact enough that it is worth the tradeoff?

2) Can you run a sustain pedal on the mini?

3) Since I already have Ableton Lite from my Launchkey 49, is it possible to get a controller without an Ableton Lite pass for a lower price?

Overall: I am really pleased with my Launchkey, and for what it is, the quality, and the portability, it is definitely worth the price.

As somebody with a bunch of synths (Korg Triton, Ultranova, Juno-106, SH-101, DX-7) and an Akai APC40, I've been looking for a solid midi controller that incorporated Ableton control with a quality playing keyboard. I previously had an Axiom midi controller but the latency in the keys made it unusable for somebody who actually can play piano. Had the same problem with the Alesis controller, so decided to take a third attempt and try the Novation. All I can say is this controller is everything I expected and more. The keyboard plays fantastic. Typical synth style keys, so if you're used to a DX-7, SH-101 or the Ultranova, this will feel right at home. Absolutely no latency with my Macbook Pro and Ableton. What I play is what comes out the speakers.

It only took a few minutes to get it up and running with Ableton and it's awesome to be able to launch clips, start / stop transport without touching a mouse. I've even been able to map some VST instrument controls (LFO, Oscillator, etc) which make a VST like having hardware where you can twist knobs for effect. The RGB touch pads that light up the same color as your track in Ableton is a great touch and adds to the overall aesthetic of the LaunchKey.

It comes with Novation Bass Station and V-Station VST plugins which are very useful, especially if you're doing electronic music. You also get 1Gb of LoopMasters samples with purchase, which could be helpful for first-timers just starting out or for those addicted to building your sample library.

The only thing I'm not thrilled with it the bottom of the unit is green, not black. Look a little strange but if that's the only downside, I'd say Novation absolutely nailed it on the LaunchKey MK2. Between price, function and extras, this controller is a winner all ways round.

At first time using these type of midi controllers I was expecting some difficulty adjusting to operating and setting it up with my software but it was a breeze to get the hang of it quick. Durable plastic body sits nicely in tight spaces which is a plus for most of us home producers. Ez plug n play features no driver setup necessary which is also another plus. Great velocity sensitivity for more authentic Grand Piano type feel so creations become more alive instantly. The 16 touch pads have a nice velocity sensitivity weighted pressure to smash on for drum grooves on the fly. Cool multi color LED on the touch pads. Excellent set of those hidden menus for group pad selection combos which makes it easy to control almost all midi compatible event triggers flawlessly. Figured out how to play two synth at once which is another plus. I should have visited these hardware creators a long time ago. Its the best deal for the low. I recommend you give it a try. It works magical wonders. Thank you Novation. It's been a pleasure doing business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck
Reviewed in India on November 14, 2021

Keyboard feels very good. Its not too soft or too hard. Throw of keys is sufficiently long for synthesizer type playing (I am not Pianist). The keys are not noisy or feeling plasticky like other keyboards in this price range.

All advanced functions like sliders, rotary knobs work well and have good feel about. their huge quantity makes this a synth programmer's dream. Not to mention huge potential for realtime change of numerous synth parameters while playing live. NOTE: I found the drum pads to be on hard side. It doesn't respond well to normal tapping force.

WISH LIST: I wish they could add Aftertouch feature by charging within 10% extra. More velocity curves settings required.
