However, I use my Launchkeys for live looping and the way they changed some features makes it less than ideal for commonly used features while live looping. There are no longer dedicated buttons for features that the MK2 has. For example, in order to switch to "In Control" mode, you have to hold down the new "Shift" button while simultaneously pressing another button. Another example is the track buttons for switching through tracks left and right. In order to do this, you have to hold down the "Shift" button as well, but what makes matters worse is that the track buttons are on the other side of the keyboard from the "Shift" button. I like to do live loops during my performances, so I switch tracks quite often, but this is no longer feasible with the MK3 since I have to use both hands to switch tracks, which leaves me with no free hands to continue playing on the keys. I can see this becoming a common complaint for the MK3, so hopefully they release a firmware update that enables some sort of "Caps Lock" mode that keeps the "Shift" button enabled without having to hold it down.
Doesn't matter: it's great.
Let's be clear: the tiny synth-action keys aren't gong to make you think you're playing a piano, and the pads aren't going to compare with a $500 dedicated pad. This is a cheap MIDI controller to throw in your backpack, or keep in the corner of your sofa. Good? Good.
So yeah. Within that paradigm, it's fantastic.
Lock in a chord, program arpeggios, operate your DAW's transport, totally usable pitch and mod strips, all under $100. The bundled software is dope, and it gives you access to Focusrite/Novation's ongoing Plugin Collective: tons of good stuff.
So yeah, I have a nicer, 61-key Native Instruments keyboard: but this little dude still gets used for convenience's sake. I think that's pretty high praise, tbh. :)
I said, it's ok... that's fine, I'm going to buy a couple of cables and that's it.
So I purchased a couple of midi cables, and guess what. They did not work.
Tried another one. It didn't work either.
I took a look at the manual and specifications. It seems that it's not a regular jack to midi cable. It has to be an "specific" 3.5 jack to midi cable. So I purchased by looking at the description of each cable, and I found one that claimed to work with several beatboxes and keyboards controllers.
I did the mistake to give it a chance. Once I got the cable, it didn't work either.
So I contacted novation, and they told me that only the "Type A" midi cable will work.
Ok fine. Went for a Type A midi cable. Received the midi cable. It didn't work.
That's enough, I said. I downloaded the schematic for the famous "Type A midi cable" and grabbed a tester, in continuity mode, to test each and every pin to pin connection of each midi cable I purchased.
None of those cables, despite claims, matched the "Type A midi cable" schematic.
So I was so frustrated that I sent the schematic to an electronic guy, who built the cable for me.
By the time the cable was ready I already sold the whole thing.
I went for the keystep, which lacks the pads, but at least it has midi in and midi out, standard connector!
As it should have been from the beginning.
What's wrong with a company that they cannot include a midi cable that's so difficult to get. I mean, they could have included at least a short midi cable, or adapter, or whatever. But no, they didn't.

I sent it back. Thanks amazon.
