This is among my favorite of Bill Dixon's albums. I like the lineup that includes his trumpet accompanied by two bassists (Mario Pavone, who has plenty of good albums of his own, and Alan Silva) plus drums (Laurence Cook). The music is perhaps best described as having elements of the avant garde and elements of free jazz, yet it is mellow and austere in parts. I once read an interview of Bill Dixon in which he defined the perfect music form as being a balance of emotion and intellect, and that balance is achieved here through the players' thoughtful playing that breathes nicely. The musicians listen to each other and interact thoughtfully to provide a synergy that will be timeless. Although recorded some three decades ago, this music will always sound futuristic and evolved. Is that not what jazz should be?

This record finds Bill Dixon the trumpeter at the top of his game. From the opening solo trumpet flourish and into the ensueing group interplay, Dixon's playing is full of emotional complexity and sound development. The band is one of the best groups Dixon has used. A fantastic way to get into this legend of jazz, the album contains a wonderful flow to ride. It is a recording of a live concert in Europe, and has the vitatlity and excitement of great show. It is very difficult to see these masters perform live anymore so a recording like this is a true treasure. Get it, and listen!
