Lay has labored on the fringes of the alternative comic scene for more than a decade. A few years ago, she landed a regular gig drawing a weekly strip for a handful of alternative weeklies, and those efforts make up this first collection of her work. Much of it is short, self-contained strips that are effective in their economy even though most of them mine the familiar ground of relationships that's fodder for so many contemporary female cartoonists. Two serials reedited seamlessly into full-length stories, however, best show off Lay's imagination: in the title story, the heroine braves the afterlife to rescue the soul of her comatose boyfriend, while "Invisible City" is an epic tale about the blind potion-maker Madame Asgar and a lost tribe in the South American rain forest. All the stories are well-crafted, attractively drawn, and entertaining, but they lack the sense of artistic self-expression that characterizes the best alternative comics. Perhaps that lack is the toll exacted by weekly deadlines. It'll be worth following Lay's work to find out whether that's the case. Gordon Flagg

You can't go wrong buying and reading any Carol Lay Kindle offering. Her art is crisp, her storytelling is superb, and her wit can be both cutting and whimsical. Both classical Carol, like NOW, ENDSVILLE, and her new work available on Kindle feature her own added coloring. Collect them all, savor them, and share them with friends. Each week, my much younger self would clip Carol Lay's black and white Story Minute strip from the L. A. WEEKLY's comics page. Preceding Story Minutes, running for almost half a year, the serial story "Now, Endsville" established Lay as an artist to watch. Drawn in her distinctive early "big tooth" style, it combined a tale about relationships and self-discovery with adventure, humor, surrealism, and (ultimately) poignancy. Her draftsmanship, her cartoonist's chops, were already apparent, as were as her storytelling skills.

A few years back, a somewhat awkward, still in black-and-white, e-book version of "Now, Endsville" came out. The best way I could get the story for my Kindle then, I got it.

Last year, Carol Lay began her LAY LINES page on GoComics.com. She revisited "Now, Endsville", reformatting it for GoComics into full-color comic-book style pages. In the year since, an even -longer serial (INVISIBLE CITY), and many Story Minute pages ("stories you can read in just a minute"), re-appeared in full color on LAY LINES, as have brand new stories written and drawn for GoComics. And she has hinted, hinted, hinted that e-books of them would eventually come out.

NOW, ENDVILLE is the first. O frabjous day! Calooh! Callay! I eagerly look forward to more.

And I feel younger again just to have an elegant and well-formatted NOW, ENDSVILLE on my Kindle to read.
