It's a book about how the various martial arts have been used to define and reinforce national and/or gender identity. I've never read anything like it. I found "Now With Kung Fu Grip!"'s discussion of the martial arts being used to help male practitioners negotiate a masculine gender identity in turbulent and uncertain social conditions particularly illustrating. It's not often one reads a gender study of the American man as he defines himself. Definitely worth a read!
I have trained in and practiced a few martial arts forms and have read many books on many different forms. Some of the books were excellent, others fair, and a few were bad. This book takes the place of the worst on this topic that I have ever seen. I cannot describe how much worse this book is compared to all of the others I've read that were simply bad.
Different folks have different tastes, so others may enjoy the book. Some people pay for the opportunity to jump out a perfectly good airplane, which I cannot imagine ever wanting to do. Before paying, first use the "Look Inside" to see what you are buying.
