"Comprehensive. Ambitious. Far reaching. Now Sings My Soul, Linda Bonney Olin's latest worship music project, reveals the fruits of a 'creative partnership' with the Holy Spirit. Linda embraces the complete range of Christian experience through her lyrics. She introduces traditional and fresh, self-penned melodies to newgenerations of worshippers. But most of all, Linda's heart for worship shows us how we, too, can deepen our devotion to Jesus Christ."
--Lora H. Zill, Editor, Time of Singing magazine of literary Christian poetry
Now Sings My Soul brings more than 100 new songs to church and personal worship. Olin's lyrics are set to familiar hymn tunes that are now in the public domain or to original compositions of the author. Doctrine reflected is common to most Christian denominations.
I recommend this book for Christians looking for new ways to expand their personal worship. It has already earned a spot as part of my own devotional times. The words of Olin's songs resonate with my life and my spirit. One of my favorites is "How Long is the Longest Night" (#4), with the closing lines, "But wait! My God has wings!/The Spirit lifts me high/above the pit of fearsome things/to soar beyond the sky!"
Olin's understanding of Scripture plus her love of worshiping through the written word result in a book of hymns that can be enjoyed as poetry for those who are not musically inclined. The Readers Edition of Now Sings My Soul dispenses with the musical scores and presents the lyrics in stanza format only--but I found that I can fit the words into the rhythms that resound in my soul. And if a tune is not one I'm familiar with, I can visit Olin's webpage to hear short audio clips of the music.
Extensive indexing adds to the book's ease of use. The Themes and Occasions index and the Scripture index make it easy to find lyrics that relate to the seasons and to my daily Bible reading.
Musicians should check out Olin's Musicians Edition or the full edition of Now Sings My Soul. Those versions include full musical scores in an 8.5 x 11 inch book, plus indices of tune names and composers. The books also include permission to project lyrics and photocopy scores for choir and congregational worship (with inclusion of the copyright information, of course).
