Every reader will enjoy the practical advice and the opportunity for self-reflection in each chapter. In my opinion, the most valuable part of the book was Chapter 7, "To Lead, Start by Listening". His quote from Fred Ross, Sr. should be the mantra of every elected official --"When you are tempted to make a statement, ask a question." The advice in this chapter would have saved me hours of time and built much stronger relationships in my first years as an elected.
This guide will help any newly elected official to focus their energy in the right way towards effective leadership. I would recommend it for all newly elected and appointed officials, as well as seasoned electeds who want to make the most of their remaining time in office.
My favorite chapter is "Dealing with Ideologues and Disrupters".
