Review

A masterpiece of Dark Fantasy at its darkest.

About the Author

In addition to his published stories, Ryan Notch is also the producer of the films Night Things and The Pill.  His photographic techniques experimenting with light graffiti have been featured in the Fu Collective Gallery in Denver.

He currently resides in Centralia, Pennsylvania, a town evacuated by the Federal government due to a coal mine fire burning beneath it since 1962. The only town in America ever to have its zip code revoked. During the day he wanders the empty streets and houses as if in a dream, looking for something he lost but can't remember where or what it was. At night he writes his horror stories by lying down next to a burning fissure along main street and placing his ear to the ground, transcribing what he hears coming up from below.

Despite lacking the final polish of a Random Housian, professionally-edited publication, this novelette DELIVERS. I was spellbound the entire journey. The realm of Nowhere Blvd is crafted with the skill of a master.

This would make an AMAZING screenplay as well...boy would I love to see it realized in film.

Probably one of the best self-published kindle books I have had the pleasure of reading. I have no connection to the author either - a friend of mine who likes horror turned me on to it, and it blew me away. The pacing, storyline and characters are all extremely memorable.

I will never think of the old "boogeyman" legend the same way again.

After reading this book, I can certainly say that is definitely scary! Now I can see why they ask if you are over 13 after being able to post a review on Amazon! The author has you sitting on the edge of your seat, awaiting to read each next page with surprise!

You have to read it almost in one setting because you won't be able to put the book down once you discover a boy goes missing and what happens to the boy. Great horror genre!

Nowhere Blvd is not your traditional "monsters under the bed" story, and it is certainly not all in your imagination. Instead, Notch takes a classic childhood theme (a boy travelling to a magical land) and turns the story inside out, upside down, and obliquely. The magical world soon turns out to be more and more horrific, and as the novella continues, I found myself desperately flipping to the next page, holding my breath, thinking "do go in there!" The novella is captivating in the way of a truly good horror movie, where you know you should shut your eyes but just can't help watching what happens next.

The main character is also truly inspiring, showing an amazing amount of resourcefulness and ingenuity for a small boy. Notch does an excellent job of demonstrating how a child's psyche might transform if exposed to true danger and peril, with no hope of rescue (except that which you make for yourself.) The only downside to Nowhere Blvd is that it is not longer, and the cliffhanger at the end leaves readers frustrated and begging for a sequel (hint hint.)

Nowhere Blvd is a great psychological thriller that really leaves you wanting more, and you want to keep reading to get to the end.

It tells the story of a young boy who went missing from his home and then reappears back in his own bedroom where he had originally disappeared, two years later totally changed. THe story proceed by interlacing his present circumstances with flashbacks to his harrowing experience and how he was taken. When he is taken the boy thinks it is a fun adventure but after awhile he discovers things he wasn't supposed to know, and then the terror begins.

The book concludes with a thought provoking ending that some could find ambiguous. Nevertheless you will find it hard to tear yourself away from this haunting story.

This book was so readable.... the plot was brilliant & the story flowed so well & always held my interest.

All the way up to the final paragraph the reader is wondering what little Spencer will choose.

Ryan Notch hit it out of the ballpark with this novel. Great job & an exciting trip for the reader.

I think that there is something new in this story. What that new thing is I can't put my finger on. I further think that this author could be the next Stephen King - I mean back when Stephen King could still tell a good story.

The story wouldn't keep an adult up at night, but I definitely wouldn't read this story to a child. I'm going to be looking for further stories from this author.

why is Ryan Notch not a best selling author?

I have read several of his stories and enjoyed them, but Nowhere Blvd blew me away. It was horrifying without being overpowering. if I really think about the content and Spencer's journey, it's almost too horrifying to bear. But it is handled perfectly with enough detail to make it real and nightmarish but not so much that I couldn't read it. in fact I couldn't stop reading it. I made the mistake of starting it before bed and didn't actually go to bed until it was finished. The story pulls you to the next page so quickly you don't have time to look at a clock. Besides time is different in Nowhere Blvd.

At its surface this is a story about childhood fears. It is creepy and terrifying, but what this story really left me with is the length someone can go to survive and at what point do we loose our humanity to do it. which is a much scarier and more real theme than the boogeyman.

There is also something beautiful about the way Notch writes, even when what he is writing is so far from beauty.

I very rarely get truly spooked by a book, but when I went downstairs after reading this one I took a flashlight.

Nowhere Blvd by Ryan Notch

Horror Reader, October 7 discussion

Poor little Spencer Williams. At eleven years old his bedroom closet becomes a transport to a very frightening dimension when a crazy-arse monster, who goes by the name of Smiling Jack, rules the day and seems to have a particular hatred for Spencer. Suddenly Spencer is back in his own bedroom with his parents and sibling. But how did he get there, why can't he talk and will he ever be the same he was before his unwanted visit to Jack's world.

The story moves quickly. It is centered around Spencer and his successes and failures. Spencer is a smart kid and he wants to do the right thing. He also wants the other children to be saves. He quickly figures out what's what in this new place. His character is developed over time and one can see that his situations do influence his development.

There are a lot of grammar, spelling and sentence structure mistakes in this book. It's too bad, because the idea for the book and the story line are interesting. I tried to ignore the mistakes as I was reading, but somethings just pop out. The author probably needs to have someone he can trust beta-read for him. It would cost nothing more than maybe a free copy of the pre-published book. There are money people on-line willing to do this. I happen to be one of those people. Some advertize on their book review sites and have outstanding references.

I'm going to give this book a little less than 3 stars because of all the grammar mistakes, but I am rounding it up to 3

Recommended with caution regarding the grammar errors.
