Shoegazing blueprint from 1990! Includes "Vapour Trail" and "Taste".
Ride was an essential element of the wall-of-sound, trippy, melodic shoe-gazing movement of the early '90s. Nowhere is their best album and is one of the prettiest albums of that era. Songs are psychedelic wash of reverberation, and ghostly, passive vocal melodies. Born from the womb of My Bloody Valentine distortion, Ride tempers their sound with an easier melody, reaching across to the pop spectrum. "Vapour Trail" stands out as the leader of the pack--a gorgeous song that floats and drones in and out of your head like a cleansing fog. --Beth Bessmer

VAPOUR TRAIL immediately grabbed my attention, I thought it was quite beautiful. I knew nothing of the "shoe-gazing" scene or of the seminal "LOVELESS" album by MY BLOODY VALENTINE.
NOWHERE has real atmosphere, I think the music feels like shades of blue and washing waves (as depicted on the cover). This music is full of feedback and layers of distortion but controlled to create something wonderful. Melodic.
I enjoy the drums very much, at times they are very powerful and distinct. Sometimes the drums feel like the most important part of NOWHERE. Laurence Colbert's percussion on this record is wonderful. I'll leave it at that...
I have enjoyed this album for ten years now. How time goes by! To me this CD is near perfect. It's still powerful and for me it's also nostalgic. This album has stayed in or near my CD player for more than 10 years and I am sure I will continue to enjoy it.
Sadly, (in my opinion) this is RIDE's greatest effort never to be matched by their later releases. I agree with another reviewer comment here on AMAZON.COM - that every record that followed grew weaker and weaker. I became less of a RIDE fan as they adopted the "60's retro" traditional rock stylings.
To look further into RIDE during a very short but utterly brilliant era - An interested listener might want to look into finding a copy of the TODAY FOREVER UK import CD. It has 4 tracks: UNFAMILIAR, SENNEN, BENEATH and TODAY
TODAY FOREVER is a perfect companian piece to NOWHERE, and I do believe that all of the TODAY FOREVER tracks were of the same period in which NOWHERE was recorded.
I hope you will enjoy RIDE "NOWHERE" as much as I have. Thanks.
