This Swype keyboard is so smooth, I'm writing this review using it on my phone.

I've been using Swype on my Android phones for 2+ years. It's gotten quite polished in that time, but has always been super-fast and functional versus tap to type keyboards.

I've hooked a few co-workers with its fluidity. It seems those who don't take to it struggle with touch typing on a full-sized keyboard, and I guess it makes sense that you have to know your qwerty layout well, to make this app actually work as intended: "hunting and pecking" with Swype is difficult with a finger blocking the screen!

The custom dictionary is quite handy in learning odd street names, places and people. It's not as contextually aware as Google's version, but that doesn't make it bad -- corrections are very easy. And stock "nuisance" words can be deleted: 's'likes to pop up place of 'a', but long-pressing 's' on the word selection bar provides the option to delete it from the dictionary.

The predictive text is ok. But where it comes in handy is its contextual awareness, when I'm going back to edit a line, it realized the word it thought I wanted is probably no longer correct, and highlights the word it thinks matches the sentence. (For example, word= weird and it= out in the previous sentence.) As I mentioned, Google does this better a higher percentage of the time, but Swype is close behind.

Numbers are a key press away, or I can long press an alpha character if I just want a single digit or two, or long press the number key to get a handy number keypad. Symbols are similarly accessible, but many common symbols are buried two keypresses deep, and some aren't accessible from the number keyboard (-dash- - hello?).

Don't get me wrong, I love the functionality of Swype. But it's been almost 2 months since Nuance has pushed an update in the Google Play Store, one that, according to them, is all about performance, with SIGNIFICANT performance improvement and Kit Kat functionality issues resolved.

After initially saying that the Amazon app store update is running just a little behind, the new recent position, as conveyed on the Swype forums is to not release it at all on Amazon.

So thanks Nuance! Here I am, having BOUGHT a product from you, through an app store that you tout on your website, still waiting for you to push an update through.

Had Swype been a security product this would have been unimaginable. But I guess it's ok cause it's only the main text input source used?

Edit 21 March 2013: fixed typo

The version of Swype that is currently on Amazon is older than the one on the Play store. The Amazon one works really well. The newer version on the Play store is laggy. Lots of people are commenting on this and Swype / Nuance has not responded about what it's doing about it. It's a great product, but the lack of responsiveness from Nuance (on the new version) is a troubling leading indicator about the future of the product. For now, the version on Amazon rocks. Get it while you can, and don't do auto-updates!

P.S. I would rate this product a firm 5 if Nuance were to demonstrate that it is committed to user responsiveness.

Swype is the best keyboard I've ever used(better than swift in many ways ), but the Amazon version never updates, and it's a paid one, so it's a waste of money here.

I have an LG phone, 4" screen and it's quite adequate. However, when typing anything, text, e-mail, whatever, trying to make words with individual letter taps is all but impossible. I get wrong letters, many misspelled words, and most of the time while I'm replying to someone, right in the middle of my typing they send me 3 more messages wanting to know if I'm ignoring them or what.... trouble is, single letter texting is just too darned awkward, slow and makes you look like you have no mastery over your own language. This keyboard is quick, accurate, forgiving with it's interpretations and is a much more effective way of communicating. It's got plenty of settings and versatility.
The only thing that keeps me from giving all 5 stars is the fact that while you can add and edit "your words" in the dictionary, when this thing gets a word stuck in it's brain it wants to keep tossing out instead of what you want, it's impossible to get it to STOP! For example: I use the word "was" quite often. But this thing in the past has gotten the word "ess" stuck in it's brain in place of "was" and since it wasn't a word I added, I couldn't get rid of it. I mean "ess"? is that even a word? Why is "ess" in the stock dictionary as a word to begin with? It also likes to enter "easy" instead of "way" It likes to replace "ya" with "us" and many others that despite backing up and trying to replace the word with a carefully planned swipe, it just refuses to accept what you want and puts in it's own nonsense. HOWEVER, this is only a big enough issue to deduct one star from the rating, not enough to not use the app and love it. You just have to keep an eye on it, and work with it.
I have used the trial long enough now that I finally bought it to keep from having to uninstall it and redownload it every 30 days.
