The reason for the 1-star? All the other crap that Nuance installed on my machine. Startup processes, some sort of cloud program, some total garbage from a company called FlexNet.
And they did it without asking.
I do not tolerate that. This is my computer, not theirs. I consider what they did no different than if they'd walked into my house and painted my walls a horrible color.
If a software company wants to install something on my computer, they better be asking first.
PS: Someone was right about this program adding a bunch of start-up tasks. I went into task manager (ctl-alt-del) selected startup and disabled all the Nuance items. Seems like the program still runs fine without the startup items.
The only real issue I found was with the "Make PDF Searchable" feature, which OCRs the text so you can find words within the document. The feature itself worked fine, except in some cases where I had rotated a page and cropped it, the "Make Searchable" function would move the crop rectangle so that part of the page was no longer visible. I was able to work around this by using the "Make Searchable" function BEFORE cropping.
All in all, I am very happy with its ease of use, I didn't have to look up much in the manual. This is great software for a price far less than Adobe Acrobat Standard.
Adobe takes the longest because it is by far the largest download in GBs. Maybe that is why it cost so much. The rest were fine and I didn't have any of the registration and watermark glitches some people reported with P-PDF-P. Looks like a couple updates fixed that, but the update was like a total reinstall which was weird. One thing that ticked me off was the P-PDF-P was the only one you couldn't download a trial of, so I had to buy it to try it.
SCAN TO EDITABLE TEXT USING OCR
Foxit 7 was best in giving clear text, even highlighted text, but like most, couldn't handle superscripts. Editing a word in a line did not flow text through to the next line.
Adobe DC did the best job of handling superscripts and had good OCR, but editing was a jumbled mess with uneven line to line spacing in separate blocks.
Nitro 10 did not do OCR as well as Foxit or Adobe, but editing was about as good as it gets with text flowing from one line to the other.
P-PDF-S Standard doesn't allow you to OCR to editable text at all. It has an advanced edit function that is next to worthless. But if you take the scanned document, and use their Convert Assistant program, it will convert it to Word, for example, and the OCR recognition is superior to any of the others, albeit an extra step. Superscripts are no problem and then you have Word editing capabilities.
People seem to feel that Adobe has the best interface (maybe because it costs an arm and a leg), but I give it to Nitro. I didn't have to hunt for the icons I wanted - there were right where I expected them. I think P-PDF-S is good, Foxit seemed a bit weak in polish, and Adobe was OK.
P- PDF-S is hands down the best. It uses its own scanner interface instead of relying on the native panel (at least for my old Brother 9440CN). It retains your last settings and just works. Adobe was second best in this regard. Nitro would scan and I would get nothing - had to figure out on my own that 1200 DPI doesn't work even though it lets me choose that (not Nitro's fault, they all had a problem with 1200 DPI). Nitro also would sometimes stall unless I closed the scanner dialog box manually. Foxit was similar to Nitro.
Nitro was the worst here. Four times slower that the rest. Adobe, Power PDF and Foxit were probably similar but I didn't time them.
The perfect PDF software doesn't exist. As many said in reviews, P-PDF-S has glitches in the interface, how it does things, etc., but it was the least expensive and best in OCR (with an extra step). In the short time I have spent with it, it does seem to be a little more stable than its previous version, has a prettier interface, but still isn't as intuitive at Nitro. Nitro would be my next favorite, but at 4x the price of P-PDF-S, it's a non-starter and only available direct as far as I can tell. Foxit would be next at about twice the price of P-PDF-P, but in order to properly edit a PDF, it would be a similar two-step process with OCR not as good as P-PDF-P. Adobe always surprises me at how much of a PITA it is, and at over 10x the price of P-PDF-S, it is ridiculous. I would have to go back to college so I could get the student pricing, and I already have three degrees! In its defense, it is better in some areas but should excel in all. So,,,,, am I just giving the nod to P-PDF-S because I had to buy it to try it - absolutely not. I figured I would have to buy two packages, as many people have, to do the job as no single software is great in every area. I was actually shocked that P-PDF-S appears to do what I need it to do and holds up well to the competition. Lucky it wasn't a $100, or I wouldn't have even tried it, as THEY DON'T LET YOU TRIAL IT!!
