No IR detecting product handles glass or reflective surfaces well. Read up on IR security cameras or gasp.... IR non-contact thermometers. Think.... Oven door glass is designed to reduce IR emissions i.e. heat, so it wouldn't be accurate. Now, would it. A non-contact thermometer detects IR waves, which could be the air between it and the surface you want a temp reading. So, of course the closer you are the more accurate the reading. And really folks, it's a inexpensive "cheap" non-contact thermometer, so not feet away, but centimeters away. Fact is non-contact IR thermometers will not read an internal temperature of an object. Thanks to all the bakers. I got a chuckle out of the negative reviews you posted. Basic research..... Here I'll start you out [...] Google "IR Non-contact Thermometer Transcat theory" for a very good explanation of how one works. Tip: If you are using a IR thermometer with a shiny object, you can compensate by covering the surface to be measured with masking tape or flat black paint. Allow time for the tape or paint to reach the same temperature as the material underneath. Measure the temperature of the taped or painted surface. This is the true temperature of the object.

I checked this against a Craftsman infrared thermometer and agains 3 other digital thermometers. All 4 of the other thermometers are within 1 degree of each other. This is 8 degrees off (high) on everything else we test. I guess you get what you pay for.

Believe the inaccuracy reviews. This was anywhere from 5 to 12 degrees off, and I compared it to 4 other thermometers. When refrigerated items need to be held between 33 and 41 degrees, being 10 degrees off is huge.

Returning it.

This is a simple and inexpensive infrared thermometer. I haven't found myself using it as extensively as I originally planned, but it has served quite well for some quick readings so far.

A few things to bear in mind: like all optical thermometers, the distance from the target, as well as the color and material of the target can make a substantial difference. For instance, this thermometer has a Distance-to-Spot ratio of 12:1. Practically, this means that for a target of 6 inches, the maximum distance at which you can reliably measure the temperature is 72 inches. Beyond this range, the thermometer will also measure objects around the target, potentially skewing your measurements. So, smaller objects will necessitate closer readings. Second, remember that these thermometers works on the principles of emitted energy. So, objects that are highly reflective will produce less accurate results than so-called duller objects, simply as they are reflecting more of the infrared energy from the thermometer.

If you bear these constraints in mind, it's quite easy to get reliable measurements from targets and to know when and why a measurement may lie outside of the expected range.

A fun toy - played with it for awhile. We loved teasing the dogs with it! However, it is highly inaccurate. I tested it in many ways with different substances using classic scientific methods and could never get the same reading twice. Readings of identical substances could vary as much as 12 degrees. Compared it every time to two other thermometers that are highly accurate. Loved the idea, but really useless if you need an accurate temperature.

I purchased a similar item that was bundled with a moisture meter at my local Costco. Suffice to say, after I exchanged it 3 times, I gave up. The moisture meter worked great, but the thermometer would give all sorts of crazy readings when it encountered anything below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It reported that my home freezer was 171 degrees Fahrenheit.

So, I was a little apprehensive when I saw this model on Amazon. It looked similar to the other model and was quite inexpensive. Well, don't judge a book by it's cover. This model works great. I really could not be more pleased.

It is fast to get a reading and it works well when testing temperatures that are hundreds of degrees or when checking the freezer, it accurately reports 12 degrees. I've tested it on a variety of surfaces and for the price, you can't beat it. The laser finder is a nice touch too so you know exactly what you are testing.

Seems to give random readings, never know if it will be correct or not and this is on a black cast iron pan. Usually comes in about 20-30% off, other times it's spot on. Returned.

We bought this as a replacement for the Kintrex JET0421 which was returned because the battery door would not close.
This Nubee is so far off its a joke. I measured a cold drink this morning with a thermometer is was 36 degrees the Nubees measured 65 deg when I brought it and inch away it measured sixty. Similar results for all cooking . This is going back my search is over I give up on these items For the cheap price you get cheap technology. The more expensive Kkntrex couldn't close the battery door.
