reputation, his Chicago period recordings are fairly grounded in true jazz. Sometimes more mainstream jazz critics will dismiss his music as
unprofessional, but they are just not listening closely enough. This album contains some swinging songs with good blowing - Star Time, for example. Watusa wouldn't be out of place on a Dave Brubeck album. Nubia has a good drum solo and Sun playing electric piano (he is probably the first jazz cat to do so). Of course it is the way out stuff that Sun's fans crave and there is plenty here to make them happy. The closing track Aiethopia features abstract flute over tribal rhythms and vocalizations.
The second album The Bad and the Beautiful is the first album he made after relocating to New York City. It suffers from the same poor fidelity as most of his albums of that period, but that doesn't deter real Sun fans. The music is still jazz, but is played by a smaller band - John Gilmore, Marshall Allen,Pat Patrick,Ronnie Boykins and Tommy Hunter - who would form the core of his early NYC group. This album has the last three cover songs they would preform for at least 15 years. The best tracks however are their own - Search Light Blues, Exotic Two and On the Blue Side.
There are also two bonus tracks, neither of which are any big deal. All in all, a worthy buy. I would have given this 4 1/2 stars if I could - 5 for Nubians and 4 for B & B.
