Dakota Sloane, a tough-as-nails former foster kid, has spent her life running from the past. Logan Garcia, a man haunted by secrets, has only one goal: to drink himself into oblivion.
They're two strangers in a bar--until the news reports nuclear bombs in New York City and D.C. Before they can escape Miami, the world explodes.
As buildings collapse and fires rage, utter chaos erupts. Dakota knows of a place to ride out the coming chaos--a safe house deep in the Everglades. If Logan helps her escape, she'll bring him with her.
But Dakota's past has caught up to her. Amid the radioactive ruins of Miami, someone is hunting her. And he won't stop until he has her...or they're both dead.

About the author

I spend my days writing apocalyptic and dystopian fiction novels. Because what's more fun than imagining the end of the world from the comfort of your couch?
I love writing stories exploring how ordinary people cope with extraordinary circumstances, especially situations where the normal comforts, conveniences, and rules are stripped away.
My favorite stories to read and write deal with characters struggling with inner demons who learn to face and overcome their fears, launching their transformation into the strong, brave warrior they were meant to become.
Some of my favorite books include The Road, The Passage, Hunger Games, and Ready Player One. My favorite movies are The Lord of the Rings and Gladiator. Give me a good story in any form, and I’m happy.
Oh, and add in a cool fall evening in front of a crackling fire, a book in one hand and a hot mocha latte in the other (or dark chocolate!): that’s my heaven.
When I'm not writing, you can find me practicing at the range with my Springfield XDS or shopping for cool new gear for my bugout bag. You may find me hiking to a waterfall in the Smokies, traveling to far-flung locations, or jumping out of a plane (parachute included)!

I truly enjoyed my journey with Dakota and Logan, et al...
Dakota is tough young woman with a heart of gold, under her gruff exterior. She's practical, pragmatic, and fierce in her devotion to her sister, Eden, who was separated from Dakota in foster care. When the crap hits the fan she's more ready than most could be. She's going to do whatever she needs to get to Eden's side.
Logan, talk about a perfectly imperfect guy. He's got a rocky past to overcome to become the man he needs, and deep down wants, to be. IF he can pull his head out of his... bottle.
Either Dakota and Logan will come together to save the day, OR they'll kill each other getting there.
They're both harboring some deadly secrets that just might come back to bite them in the butt.
The story, literally, begins with a bang, and they're off... the author drew me in right away, and the action is pretty much non-stop. All the characters, including the secondary ones, pull on your heartstrings. A mark of a gifted writer is when they can make you care about everyone.
Fear the Fallout
And they keep getting better! Another non-stop action story.
The pressure is on! The radiation is still at dangerous levels but Dakota can't wait any longer to get to her sister, Eden. Someone from their past is looking for them and Dakota has to get to Eden before Maddox does.
We get more of Dakota and Eden's backstory as the author fills us in on why they're in hiding.
We also get more information regarding Logan's past as well, and it's NOT what Dakota thinks!
Maddox begins to get his story told and fills in some of the knowledge gaps as well.
The world building is very well done and highlights just how UNprepared we all are should the unthinkable happen.
From the Ashes
Dakota, Logan, Eden, Julio, and Shay just cannot catch a break! While this 3rd installment still has a lot of action, it does slow down a bit, which was actually needed. Everyone is ill from radiation poisoning, and/or injured from various fires, gang run-ins, hostage taking, etc...
So, after a while, they all FINALLY get some much needed medical care, much needed government information, and can begin to plan their trek into the Everglades.
I actually appreciated the, short, breather the author gave the characters. No one can be on point constantly without some down time and these characters sorely needed the brief respite they got - that respite almost causes MORE problems for them, in the long run. NEVER trust a government run facilty to do it's best for the civilians, they simply won't. They'll do what's most convenient for the government.
In any case, the race is STILL on. Dakota may have rescued Eden, but now it's a race to their safe house in the Everglades! Will they make it there before their pasts come back to haunt them?
I read the 1st 3 books in a day. They are short, but the author manages to pack a lot into them. Warning! The 3rd ends on a cliffhanger.

Following a catastrophic nuclear attack which targeted 13 major cities, millions are wiped out in an instant while others are left to deal with the after effects of radiation poisoning. Troubled teen, Dakota Sloane has been working in a bar in Miami, trying to save enough money to get her younger sister Eden, out of foster care. Two years ago, they escaped the Everglades from a cult called the Shepherds of Mercy, which is run by the fanatic Solomon Cage. Dakota has changed her name and stayed incognito since.
Minutes before the attack, Dakota spots Maddox Cage, the cult leader’s son, getting into a taxi through her bar window. Realising he’s tracked down Eden’s whereabouts, Dakota decides to up her plans to leave with Eden sooner than she had anticipated. As different cities come under attack on the news bulletin, Dakota comes to a horrifying realisation and is able to text Eden seconds before a blinding light flashes and Miami also succumbs to an attack.
Following the blast, Dakota and a few survivors from the bar seek refuge in a movie theatre as they wait for the radiation levels to drop. The survivors include Julio, the bar owner, Shay who has some medical experience and Logan Garcia, a loner, haunted by his past who seeks solace in a bottle.
Forty eight hours later, Dakota’s anxiety for Eden has worsened as she suspects that Maddox may have survived and will possibly head out for her sister. Sensing that he can handle himself with a gun, she makes a deal with Logan; access to a secure safe haven deep in the Everglades in return for accompanying her while she rescues her sister. Logan agrees. With Julio and Shay also insisting on going her, the group set out on a journey through wasteland that is fraught with danger not only from radiation but from aspects of humanity itself. Will Eden save her sister in time?
This boxset consists of the first three books in what has so far been a tense and exciting post apocalyptic survival series. Each instalment is told from four points of view; Dakota, Eden, Logan and Maddox. From the offset, I found myself totally immersed in the premise of the story. The impact on survivors from a nuclear explosion where knowledge and survival skills could be the only thing standing between life and death? Luckily our group has Dakota, who thanks to her mentor Ezra, has been taught survivalist skills.
The strength of the book lies in the fascinating world building that the author has managed to create. It’s apparent throughout that the author has done a lot of research which sets it apart from other novels of similar themes.
The characters were quickly introduced, developed and understood. Dakota, Eden and Logan are troubled protagonists, each with a dark past which is only hinted at in this instalment. We learn that Dakota and Eden were sent to a religious compound by their Aunt, following the death of their parents. They escaped and sought refuge with Ezra, a hermit who lived in the Everglades. While Dakota is tough, resilient and a survivor mainly because she’s HAD to be, Logan chooses to drown his demons in a bottle. Eden, despite being alone and hearing impaired, handles her situation admirably for a fourteen year old. Her faith in her sister, unshakable. The secondary characters were equally appealing. Julio and Shay came across as decent, caring people. Unfortunately when society breaks down, it brings out the worst of humanity too and I suspect this will become a regular occurrence now that our group has decided to venture out into the open.
All in all this was an intriguing well executed, gritty, realistic and fast paced box set with an ending that will ensure any reader will want to pick up the next instalment.
Trigger warnings, religious cult, patriarchal societies, physical and mental abuse, child marriages, torture, gang related violence.
