This is a painstakingly researched book. Since 1973, Robert Hasting's has interviewed over 80 ex-USAF personnel.
His father worked at Malmstrom AFB and they young Robert took one of his first jobs as a janitor in the bases Air Traffic control tower. One night, one the the staff, showed him five UFO returns on the radar from then on he became hooked.
What he builds up from his research is truly amazing picture. Three types of aerial craft have persistently showed themselves to be interested in US Nuclear Air Bases, Nuclear processing plants, missile test ranges and virtually every military asset connected with nuclear weapons.
The witness testimony is backed up with references to FBI and other released US government documents. Robert Hastings has been very carefully not to damage the reputations of current USAF employees and only interviewed retired personnel. His integrity and persistence have paid off with a dazzling amount of witness testimony.
The physicological tests that nuclear base personnel means that these witnesses are of the very highest caliber.
In my opinion this is another stake in the coffin of UFO secrecy.
I have no doubt this book will become one of the best known resources of reliable witness testimony in field.
Robert Hastings' investigation of the reported UFO sightings over U.S. (and those of other nations) nuclear weapons facilities is a meticulously researched and thought-provoking effort to answer the answer two key questions regarding UFOs: are they spacecraft from outside our planet and if so, what is their purpose of being here?
"UFOs and Nukes" goes a long way towards answering those questions. Hastings has spent several decades interviewing retired military personnel who were, while deployed at SAC bases or other nuclear weapons facilities, witnesses to the seemingly effortless ability of aerial vehicles of unknown origin to penetrate the security perimeters of some of the Air Force, Army and Navy's most closely guarded nuclear air bases, missile fields and weapon storage facilities.
The witnesses to these incursions ranged from Security Police who patrolled the sites to missile crewmen and even the deputy base commander of one of the most important U.S. Tactical Air Force bases in western Europe. The accounts of these men, all of whom were carefully screened by the Air Force to operate or protect America's most powerful weapons systems, are astounding. Hastings has compiled a massive collection of reports by responsible, psychologically screened military personnel who had much to lose by even making such reports, which include close encounters with and/or visual observation of, objects that performed impossible maneuvers at speeds that far exceeded the capability of human-made aircraft.
Since he began taking reports and using the internet to put the word out about his project, Hastings has been contacted by scores of retired pilots, ICBM crewmen, security policemen and others who were present when UFOs followed their aircraft, hovered over bunkers filled with nuclear weapons and even deactivated an entire flight and a half (16) Minuteman missiles.
While the accounts of incursions into secure nuclear weapons facilities are quite enough to ponder, Hastings takes the reader a step further by speculating about the motive of such penetrations. He presents his theory - that intelligent beings from other worlds are sending us a message about the horrible consequences of producing and deploying nuclear and thermonuclear weapons - throughout the book. It is a matter that, even if there are no extraterrestrial visitors - is still of vital import.
Unless former Capt. Robert Salas, Lt. Col Charles Halt, Dr. (former Air Force Lt.) Robert Jacobs and all of the others who were witnesses to these incredible events are liars or delusional, aerial vehicles of unknown origin have been, and are now, routinely visiting our nuclear weapons sites and are occasionally demonstrating their seemingly effortless ability to interfere in their operation.
As a trained observer (U.S. army field artillery forward observer in the 1970s) and former UFO skeptic who experienced his own sighting of unexplained aerial phenomena in the night skies over central Arizona more than a decade ago, I can only say that there is compelling evidence in this book that aircraft/spacecraft of unknown manufacture and origin are flying in our skies and maneuvering in ways cannot be explained with our technology and scientific knowledge. Robert Hastings' "UFOs and Nukes" makes a strong case for their being of extraterrestrial origin. We can only hope that his theory for their behavior is correct.
The author's interest in this subject was first kindled in March 1967 when as a teenager from an Air Force family, he had an after-school cleaning job in the control tower at Malmstrom AFB in Montana where his father was stationed. One evening he was shown "unknown" targets on the radar screen (i.e. UFOs) above the nuclear missile base, and told that fighters had been scrambled to intercept. Later he was told that the intruders had outperformed the USAF jets and flown away.
When Hastings went on the US college circuit in 1981 to lecture about the government cover-up of the UFO phenomenon, he discovered many former military personnel were attending the talks. Some would approach him after the lecture, reveal details of their UFO encounters whilst in the military and agree to a confidential interview. He has also been contacted by former Air Force Missileers via their Association and, gradually, built up a reputation for thoroughness, professionalism and discretion which has led many former military witnesses to trust telling their stories on the record. Interestingly, the Inspector General's Office confirms not one "broken security" event relating to UFOs revealed by former service personnel has ever been prosecuted, so Hastings sticks with witnesses retired from the military (mainly from the Air Force) and avoids compromising current serving personnel for whom the consequences might be more serious.
The book documents more than 200 such interactions supported by hundreds of ex-military witnesses and FOIA-released documents. Incidents where UFOs have been associated with complete shut-downs of nuclear missile systems (such as that at Malmstrom in 1967 described by Salas & Klotz in "Faded Giant"), where missiles have been actually shot down in flight (i.e. the notorious "Big Sur" event) and at least one alarming event where missiles armed with live nuclear warheads were almost launched by the apparent intervention of a UFO are related in convincing detail. There is a chapter on interactions between UFOs and Soviet nukes, a section on the interest shown by "visitors" in civilian nuclear power plants, and a most interesting chapter on the CIA and its involvement in the UFO issue.
As another reviewer commented, it's a pity the new book is not widely available from Amazon sellers - as I write this review, two new copies are for sale on amazon.com at US$125 each. However, you can buy a new, signed copy from the author's website (google it) for about US$20 and in time second-hand copies will also become available. The author informs me that a second, updated edition will cure the few typos evident in the first (actually not that many in a 600-page book) and contain a bibliography and list of references missed from the first edition due to the rush to get the book into print prior to his TV appearances in summer 2009.
Hastings wisely shuns the UFO conference circuit in favour of universities, colleges and professional academia, in which venues he has a busy annual speaking schedule on this most important subject. "UFOs and Nukes" deserves a five-star rating for the sheer volume and thoroughness of its original research, for its conservative and grounded perspective and its vital subject matter. Hastings is a good writer, and the long sequences of factual accounts of UFO/nuclear interactions are interspersed with informed discourse on every aspect of this phenomenon and an examination of the ETH which the author sees, with good reason, as the most plausible hypotheses supported by substantial evidence.
