Great for keyboards, but not compatible with all mice

I’ve always wanted to use my Gaming Keyboard and Mouse on my tablet, because let’s be honest, most Bluetooth peripherals simply don’t cut it. I was a little let down, though. Details inside.

▶ Hardware
The Nulaxy Bluetooth adapter, in its simplest form is: an adapter for connecting your Keyboards and Mice. It does this by tricking your PC, or tablet, into thinking that it’s connecting a keyboard.

The unit, itself, is very small, being 3” x 2.4” x 0.8” inches. I originally thought that the unit would have an aluminum surface, with a plastic trim, but it’s actually entirely made of plastic – a little disappointing. The device is very lightweight. Actually, I think the unit could have been made much smaller, but it probably wasn’t to promote aesthetics.

It’s powered by two AA batteries, or micro USB. I would have liked a built-in battery instead of two AA batteries, because most keyboards require more power.

On the device is a power switch (which actually looks like a knob), two USBs (for the peripherals), one micro USB (to charge), and a pairing button with a built-in blue/red LED.

▶ Set up
Set up is very simple. As soon as the device is powered, it’ll start the pairing process. It’ll require the user to enter a 5 to 8 digit numeral code. This means the user won’t be able to use a mouse until the keyboard is paired.

▶ Testing
For testing, I tried the follow keyboard and mice on the Android and Windows OS. I have marked each item with a pass or fail rating. You can assume a PASS or FAIL rating applies to both OS.

Keyboards:
• dell keyboard – PASS
• Razer Anansi – PASS

Mice:
• SHARKK 16400DPI Gaming Mouse – FAIL
• Razer Orochi Mouse – FAIL
• ShhhMouse Silent Mouse – FAIL
• Dell Alienware Black USB Mouse – PASS
• HP 3 Button USB Mouse – PASS

As you can see, every keyboard successfully worked, and 2/5 of the mice succeeded.

On Android, the failed devices would cause volume to go up and down, lock screen to turn on and off, power menu to show up, keyboard to randomly type characters and numbers, all simultaneously at the same time. On Windows, the failed devices would cause all keyboard functions to cease, except for the control button. Only un-pairing and restarting would fix either issue.

Because operating systems see the Nulaxy Bluetooth Adapter as a keyboard, all keyboards are recognized. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for mice. The Nulaxy can only emulates mice touches and movement. If your mouse requires any drivers, like most gaming mice and wireless mice do, then they won’t work. I knew something was very fishy when 15 other reviewers mentioned keyboards, but not mice.

Response time of the keyboard is almost immediate. There is absolutely no lag.

▶ Final Thoughts
I’d be lying if I told you I was completely satisfied with this product. I really love the ability to use a full-sized gaming keyboard, but the Nulaxy isn’t completely compatible with all mice. It’s a lot of hype, that the product doesn’t live up to.

Pros:
+ Portable
+ Converts wired keyboards and (some) mice into a Bluetooth connection.
+ Response time is almost immediate. No lag.
+ Easy to set up

Cons:
- Only 3 button mice are compatible. All wireless and gaming mice are incompatible.
- Doesn’t have a built-in battery. Instead uses AAA or micro USB connection to power.
- Build wise, it doesn’t feel polished. They should have either made it out of aluminum, or chose a different style.

Nice as a prototype; definitely needs more work.

This adapter (mostly) works, but it does have several issues that need fixing in its next version (if one ever comes).

What works? Setting the adapter up is indeed easy. AAA batteries and micro USB cable for power work as advertised, and the discovery/pairing/connection process over Bluetooth is smooth (I tried this both on an Android phone and an iPad). A (simple) USB keyboard connected to the device indeed allows the user to type; I noticed no lag. Note that I never plugged in a mouse during my tests.

What does NOT work? There are three main problems:

1) NOT ALL keyboard models work. My simpler/cheaper "5 bucks a piece" USB keyboards worked without issue, but the adapter was unable to perform with a keyboard that incorporated USB plugs of its own (a Genius SlimStar 220 Pro - still a cheap keyboard).
2) The adapter couldn't perform with a PS/2 adapter, either. I wanted to use my old IBM Model M keyboards (equipped with a PS/2 to USB adapter), and the Nulaxy adapter was unable to deal with it. In both cases, I suspect it's because the adapter can't provide enough power to the keyboard.

I could have lived with those limitations, but the third and most important failing is this:

3) The Nulaxy adapter DEFAULTS TO THE US KEYBOARD LAYOUT and there is simply no way to tell either the phone or the adapter itself what other layout to use. Instead of the US layout, I use the Spanish/Latin America one (actually, a custom one based on it) on my computers, and when typing on my phone, I just could NOT access characters like 'ñ', '¿', 'á', '‡', '³', "ಠ_ಠ", etcetera. This seriously limits the usefulness of the adapter.

Works with a Model M!!!!

The Nulaxy with its two AAA batteries doesn't supply enough power on its own to power a Model M, but if you plug a cell phone power charger into its microusb port then it will work fine. It really is quite a small device, about half the size of a wallet.

For some reason, the 'Num-Lock' lamp is always on, and when I toggle 'num lock,' the 'scroll lock' lights toggle. Other than that everything works normally, with no latency.

The Nulaxy was dead-simple to pair to my computer.

Update: I recently bought a Leopold FC660m mechanical keyboard. I tested it out with the Nulaxy and it worked, but you have to do something special to access the Fn layer. If you are planning on using this with a 60% board, you will be interested in my Reddit post, 'Model Ms can be made wireless sans hacking using a $20 Nulaxy and portable cellphone charger.'

Sends wrong codes to computer

It generally works well except for one serious problem: Rather than passing the scancode for the caps lock key to the computer, it interprets it internally and translates the scancodes for other keys into combinations with the shift key. This is wrong -- operating systems expect to receive the codes for the caps lock key, and many people (like myself) map the caps lock key to another key at the OS level. This is not a problem with bluetooth in general -- I have used various bluetooth keyboards without ever having this issue.

Nulaxy, let me know when you make a version that sends the codes to the operating system unadulterated, and I will want it.

Great concept, but my next device will have USB host mode

Tested with a Lenovo Thinkpad USB keyboard with Trackpoint. The Trackpoint didn't work at all, but that was expected. No lag, just like when plugged in via USB.Read more
