The city of Brighton promises new beginnings for Aaron, Serena, and the taciturn eslar, Ensel Rhe. But, upon their arrival, Aaron and Serena are arrested for their role in the Chaos of a week ago, while Ensel Rhe slips away on business of his own.

The pair are given the opportunity to plead their case before the earl himself, whereupon they are released and assigned a very special duty, for deep below the palace lies the Nullification Engine, an ancient machine completed hundreds of years ago but never activated. Until now. While Aaron and Serena struggle to unravel the machine's mysteries, Ensel Rhe confronts his past once more when he learns his daughter has come to Brighton, but in the company of one of his greatest enemies.

A race against time begins as Aaron comes to realize the Nullification Engine was never turned on for a reason, for once the machine reaches a state of full nullitivity, it will destroy Brighton and everyone in it.

I try to write the kind of books I loved as a kid and still enjoy as an adult. The Alchemancer series is no exception to that. This second book picks up right where The Five Elements left off. Aaron, Serena, Ensel Rhe, and many others are back, this time seeking safety and refuge in the city of Brighton. Little do they know that there is no safety! Nor is there any refuge. This is high steamfantasy adventure, folks, where anything can happen. Back is the adventure, the intrigue, the mystery, and the likeable (and unlikeable) characters. Get ready for even more elemental magic, infernal machines, airships, and, of course, plenty more 'hokum.'

I really enjoyed the book. About the first book in this series, I wrote:

This is a very good book that is a fun quick read. The characters are very well developed and believable. The plot is very well developed and the world that Mr. Marlowe has created is rich and complex. With surprising twists in the story and a climactic ending, I strongly recommend this book to anyone. I eagerly await Mr. Marlowe's next book.

This second book did not disappoint. Mr. Marlowe has great characters and he did a great job adding further depth. Once again, his plot was very well developed and he added to the richness and complexity of the world that he has created. While fantasy series are often trilogies, I find myself hopeful that this will continue past three books. I highly recommend this book and once again, I eagerly await the next book.

Disappointing

After a reasonable first effort in the first book of the trilogy, I was hopeful that this book would build on its strong-but-unfulfilled promise and help flesh out a world and characters that were initially underserved.

Unfortunately, instead of vectoring up, this book takes everything down. I'm honestly not sure what happened here... how is it that the subsequent effort manages to build on the weaknesses of the first while conscientiously avoiding each and every one of its strengths? You have to plan for a strike-out like this, right? Or was the thought that by emphasizing earlier flaws from the first book the author could "practice" and get better here through repetition?

Undeveloped characters simply become flat and uninteresting; dialog goes from only stilted to downright tragic; and re-imagining a formulaic concept becomes laughable rather than laudable. (Really, zombies? Are you kidding me?) Adding insult to injury: rather than ending in a self-contained, reasonably satisfying way, this book attempts the "cliff-hanger" finale in order to make you want to read the third book.

Sorry, bub. It's a no-go. Not gonna work. I'm cutting my losses and ending with this book. I won't be taking the plunge with the next book in the series when there are less disappointing endeavors to explore.

So much fun!

This turned out to be one of my favourite surprises of the year. I wasn't surprised that it was good, I expected that after reading the first book. I was surprised and pleased that the author managed to continue on from the first book and yet make this one so different from the first.

There is still the steampunkish (not a word but oh well) feel to this, in fact a bit more so than in the first, but the plot was entirely different and there were lots of unexpected events and even some "Wow!" moments that I did not forecast.

Scott Marlowe has definitely figured out how to get around the boring second series book curse with this title. The writing was strong and solid, and right from the beginning the personalities of the characters shined.

I was particularly impressed by the events near the halfway point of this story. I love it when a character has to make a tough decision and you don't know exactly what they will do. The dialogue was well written and believable and made me feel like I was there. I liked the way the main characters played off of one another and created a special dynamic.
