I spotted this Jelly Comb brand one a week ago, and saw lots of positive reviews, and a very reasonable price, so I bit the bullet and ordered one for myself. It features "Blue switches" which are Outemu brand, and actually feel quite nice to use. For anyone who is worried that they aren't official Cherry MX switches, do not fret, you can do far worse than these. They compare very well to my Filco which has Cherry MX Blues, and especially for the price, I couldn't tell much of a difference at all.
The build quality is very nice, solid metal plate, and a plastic base, with quality rubber feet to keep the unit from sliding around as you work. the cable is top quality as well, covered in braided nylon, which was a nice touch. The cable seems solid, and not likely to fray or have any issues.
Overall, I am really impressed with this Keypad and I happily give it a 5 star review. If you are on the fence and the price hasn't already convinced you, take my word for it, you will not regret giving this one a try, absolutely the best value out there.
This thing is heavy, I mean its got serious weight for a little old numpad, but that's good! It doesn't move around, solid feet too.
The keys! Oh man juicy mechanical keys similar to cherry mx blues but are actually Gateron switches. They click perfectly and just feel so good to hit!
The cable, this cable is braided perfection! Logitech take notes cause braid is fire! It even came with a little velcro loop for the slack, gracias Jelly!
The design!!!11!! I mean not only does it feel good but it looks good! This thing has some sharp angles, it's got that modern sleek which I just love.
GOLD PLATED BABY! I know it doesn't mean much but they put some flare on this bad boy
Legends, look surface printed, might wear down, will probably replace anyway. Font is a little out there but I can dig it.
Non Standard layout? Whatever, I can make it work, I LOVE THIS THING!
Only comes in black! I do like me some white for the office black for the home but you know, whatever.
In terms of key wiggle, its about the same as my real cherry mx blue keyboard (wasd), so its good there to be honest, mabye a tiny bit rattle sound when pressed all the way down, not a big deal -- but it definetly makes it feel overall cheaper. This is probably because the key caps are thin. Overall if my $130+ wasd keyboard cherry mx blue, stock keys was a 8.5 out of 10, this would be a 6 out of 10. That’s pretty great given the really affordable price. I'm gonna buy one or two of these for my co-workers. I came into it thinking aggh I'm gonna get broken down garbage for this price, and I came out really impressed at how similar it is to my existing keyboard. Really no complaints here. I'd definitely recommend this to others.
First of all, compared to any other mechanical numpad on Amazon or anywhere else, you simply will not get a quality of switch, manufacture, form or function than you will with this one. It absolutely deserves five stars for delivering exactly what it says on the tin, and actually I think it's way better than I could have expected.
Now, with that said, there are a few things you definitely want to know before you decide to go down this road. These are just facts, and don't detract from the rating at all, otherwise I would have done so.
- non-standard layout (the + key is not tall) makes it REALLY hard to get printed / doublestruck matching legend keycaps. You'll either need blanks, customs, randoms, or some other creative solution... or just use the ones it comes with. Looks like OEM profile ABS.
- numlock is device independent. This keypad will literally spit out "NumLock-KP0-NumLock" when you press the 0 key.
- the top four keys will only work in Windows. In other OSs, they just spit out alt codes and produce no useful or meaningful output.
- the numpad is not programmable.
As I said, none of those reduce this numpad to less than five stars, because the build quality is stellar, and it's clearly a premium device. EVEN if you ONLY use this as a project foundation, the switches, case and top plate are worth the cost of the whole unit. That's literally what I'm doing with it as a full time linux user -- desoldering and removing the PCB, hand wiring the existing switches, and putting in a teensy to make it fully programmable.
Despair not, however... if you use it as is, especially in windows, you will have no problems and it's really just a great device!
