Although the taste is rather different from any other oil I'm familiar with, I have come to like it. There is an aspect of the unique flavor that is reminiscent of butter, but I would not call the taste buttery, per se, since that could lead someone unfamiliar with it to expect something different. I find the flavor especially good in home-made stews, and the oil seems to add a body to the stew that otherwise would seem thin and not quite satisfying. I also have started eating a tablespoon full in the morning before breakfast and find it soothing to my stomach.
As a farmer working outdoors with livestock in the hard winter of a state on the border with Canada, my hands become severely, painfully cracked and dry to the point of bleeding at times, and their condition is exacerbated by the harsh, liquid soaps encountered in most stores and other public places. I have tried many kinds of creams, lotions, and hand conditioners, including prescription ones, with very little improvement and no cure. However, in the short time since I started to take the red palm oil, the cracks have healed and most of the dryness is gone. My hands are smooth enough now to caress a baby's face. I was not expecting this benefit.Read more ›
ASIA RPO: The major doughnut retailers -- from Dunkin' Donuts to Tim Hortons and Krispy Kreme -- fry their sweet treats in palm oil, or in blends of oil that include palm oil from suppliers who are clear-cutting rain forests and destroying wildlife habitat and carbon-rich peat lands. I avoid RPO from Asia.
FRESHNESS: A priority in RPO so I insure to inspect the expiration date on the jar. Unrefined RPO contains high levels of free fatty acids, moisture and impurities. The enzyme in RPO will catalyze the breakdown of triglycerides to produce more free fatty acids in crude RPO, causing rancidity during storage and transportation.
PRODUCTION: VCO or Palm kernel oil (white coconut oil VCO) is derived from the seed or the kernel but red palm oil (RPO) is derived from the fruit of the oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). RPO has been in use by African countries for centuries. Rich dark red color in its unprocessed natural state.Read more ›
