Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading Astaxanthin supplements: Nutrigold Astaxanthin Gold, Now Foods Astaxanthin, Astavita Astaxanthin, Nutrex BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin (12 mgs), Nutrex MD Formula BioAstin Supreme (6 mgs), Nutrex BioAstin Hawaiian Natural Astaxanthin (4 mgs), Viva Labs Premium Astaxanthin (4 mgs), Life Extension Astaxanthin, Jarrow Formulas Astaxanthin (4 mgs), and Nature Made Astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin is a red-pink substance found in various seafoods such as salmon, trout, krill, lobster and cooked shrimp. It is responsible for the reddish color of salmon meat, cooked shellfish and flamingo feathers.
Raw Astaxanthin is primarily grown in four areas: China (through Algae Life and Alphy Biotech), Hawaii (through Cyanotech), Israel (through Algatech), and the U.S.A. (through Valensa and Fuji Health Science). Almost all neutraceutical companies that sell Astaxanthin acquire their Astaxanthin from one of these suppliers.
Astaxanthin is a non-vitamin carotenoid compound considered to be the most stable of all carotenoids. While research is somewhat limited, it appears to be a better carotenoid than the more researched lutein and zeaxanthin.
Astaxanthin is an excellent supplement that supports the whole body. Folks who have taken Astaxanthin have noted its anti-inflammatory properties, reduced joint and muscle pain, a fading of brown age spots and sun spots, improved skin tone and color, improved vision, increased energy, reduced fatigue, sunscreen properties, lower pulse rate, improved mood orientation, improved urination, and heightened libido.
At doses of 6-12 mgs daily, Astaxanthin can decrease the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and prevent it from becoming artery clogging.Read more ›
While I don't normally write reviews, I think the media hype for astaxanthin overshadows side effects that may occur as a result of taking it, effects that all people should know prior to starting some regimen of it. Astaxanthin can affect the activity of liver enzymes, which can influence the behavior of medications taken concurrently, increasing the risk of toxicity. Astaxanthin can also disrupt hormone functioning, blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone, and hence, can potentiate male-related sexual problems. Low blood pressure can occur, as well as a number of possible drug interactions (antihistamines, asthma medication).
In my experience, this astaxanthin supplement, which has been the only change in my vitamin routine, gave me severe migraine headaches with scintilla (seeing flashing lights) and fatigue. Search 'astaxanthin side effects', and you will find others who have suffered from these symptoms as well. To this day, I am still puzzled as to why I experienced these symptoms. Needless to say, I will not be purchasing again.
While I don't want to rain on the parade of the astaxanthin enthusiasts, I simply feel that it is important that people know the risks and interactions prior to buying into all of the hype. At present, the clinical evidence to support the positive claims for astaxanthin remain minimal, so in my opinion, the risks outweigh the benefits.
JOINTS: The first thing I noticed after about 10-12 days was a great improvement in joint & muscle pain and the 'snap, crackle, pop' sounds in the mornings. I run and work out at leat 5 days a week, so my joints take a beating - BioAstin is helping greatly in this area. I wake up feeling much more mobile and refreshed rather than stiff and achy after an intense workout.
SKIN: Like many others have noted, I also have seen a wonderful change in skin tone and color. I have a nice rosy glow to my skin as well as a more 'dewy' appearance. I have always had skin on the drier side of the spectrum and since taking BioAstin it seems more supple and nourished. I also have some freckles and sun spots which appear to blend into my skin more and are not so prominent. I have yet to test this products sunblocking abilities, but look forward to seeing what happens this summer.
ENERGY: I have a pretty thorough vitamin regimen consisting of about 10 supplements (it's a lot, I know!). In this routine I take: Nature's Bounty Sublingual Vitamin B-12 2500 Mcg with Cherry Flavor - 250 Microlozenges, ...Read more ›
