I also didn't like how the display was difficult to see even when set up on a counter or stove top and how firmly you had to press the buttons before the unit would respond. The dial was easy enough to use, but it wasn't exactly quick or intuitive to set the time and temperature. My advice is to look elsewhere if you want sous vide on a budget.
I have been cooking sous vide for about a year and am a great fan of doing so. Until now I have been fiddling with a pan of water on the stove with my candy thermometer in it and pouring hot water in it, as well as checking it every 15 minutes. I have looked at immersion heaters but they have all been pretty expensive. If the device has the wattage to heat the water and the controls to hold the temperature, I cannot conceive that the more expensive unit would do a better job. Water at a particular temperature is water at a particular temperature; regardless of how expensive the heater is.
I received it a few days ago and have only used it once. At first it seemed a bit noisy - not excessively noisy but noticeable. However increasing the amount of water in the pan made the device essentially silent. The steaks I did came out flawlessly. I would recommend the device to anyone.
