This is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading omega-3 fish oil supplements: OmegaVia Pharma-Grade Fish Oil, Nutrigold Triple Strength Fish Oil Omega-3 Gold, Garden of Life Minami Nutrition Platinum Omega 3 Plus D3 Formula, Norwegian Gold Ultimate Fish Oils Super Critical Omega, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Omapure Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3 Fish Oil, Now Ultra Omega-3, UnoCardio 1000 + Vitamin D 1000, Innovix Triple Strength Omega-3, and Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 2X.

There are three major components of omega-3 in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

BREAKDOWN: Here is a breakdown of these supplements.

When buying an Omega-3 supplement you want to check how much EPA and DHA is actually provided per serving (EPA and DHA are the beneficial fatty acids you are looking for in Omega-3's). Having the background of someone working in the medical field I recommended Nutrigold to my father who happens to be a heart patient. The amount of Omega-3's(specifically EPA & DHA) provided per capsule for Nutrigold are slighter higher than his prescription strength Lovaza. Nutrigold: 750mg EPA + 250mg DHA vs Lovaza: 475mg EPA + 365mg DHA. As an added bonus they cost much less than the prescription. Don't fall for the gimmicks of the big drug companies who pay the FDA millions to get approval and pass the cost onto the consumer. I would highly recommended this product to anyone looking for a great source of essential Omega-3's. I will follow up this review at a later time with more info with regards to taste and compliance.

UPDATE(06/04/2012):

I recently visited the IFOS(International Fish Oil Standard) website(Google it). They are an independent lab in Ontario, Canada that tests fish for consistency and heavy metal content. I was unable to find any Nutrigold info on their site. So I emailed Nutrigold support a few days ago to request a copy of the IFOS Certificate from their quality control department(IFOS website suggested this). I received an email this morning with the certificate attached and they even offered to send me an updated certificate when their new batch gets analyzed. The lab results are ecactly in line with what the product claims with complete accuracy in the amount of essential Omega-3s provided. This product is 90% of the stuff your looking for (EPA + DHA) and that is a really good number. I found this info to be very reassuring of my decision to purchase this product. Here is Nutrigold's support email for anyone that may be curious: support(at)nutrigold.com

I used to have very dry eyes, in the morning my eye lids would be stuck to my eyes balls and I had put in eye drops just to open them pain free. In 2011 my eye doctor suggested I start taking Triple Omega to help dry eyes. He said this is the first thing he tries with his patients before trying more drastic measures such as tear duct plugs. I was sceptical but since Omega supposed to be good for your heart I started taking it.

My doctor told me to take two pills a day - morning and evening. Two weeks later my eyes were feeling much better with no other changes to my diet or medication. Fast forward 3 years, I am still take Triple Omega every day. I use drastically less eye drops now. When I wake up in the morning I can open my eyelids, they are not stuck to my eye balls like before. There has been no other changes in my eye care. I am not a sceptic any more!

Recently I have switched from One Nature Made Triple Omega I have been taking for years to NutriGold Omega. I can say that it works at least as well my old pills.

One Nature Made Triple Omega softgel contains
♦ Omega-3 434 mg
♦ Omega-6 276 mg
♦ Omega-9 170 mg
total 880 mg

One NutriGold Omega Triple strength contains
♦ Omega-3 1060 mg
♦ EPA 750 mg (EPA is Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic acid)
♦ DHA 250 mg (DHA docosahexaenoic acid)
♦ Other Omega-3 60 mg
total 2120 mg

So one softgel of NutriGold replace two softgels of Nature Made Triple Omega. At the time I write this review Nature Made Triple Omega is 180 gel caps is priced at $23.50. NutriGold Trimple Omega 180 gels are $37.30. This makes NutriGold very price competitive. Note that the size of the One Nature Made Triple Omega is the same as NutriGold, they are not any harder to swallow.

Omega Triple Strength Fish Oil capsules are provided by NutriGold.
