Normally you take a week to transition your dog onto a new food to avoid gastric distress, but these companies switch the recipe and shock your dog's system.
Mars Candy should have issued notice that the food was no longer available rather than trying to pull a fast one and substituting a different food all together.
Thanks Mars, I found a food to switch him to that does agree with him, and a new manufacturer that I trust.
I reached out to Nutro to inform them they may have sold a bad batch, but never heard back. We will be transitioning Marshall to a new brand as Nutro has lost a loyal customer.
I had been making him breakfast when I made my own, that is, I made a double portion to share with him. For the first few days he tried his best to look deprived and abandoned. (My husband didn't go for it). He did have his choice of 2 dry foods, and when he finally accepted that was all he was getting, he chose the Nutro. We actually started him on Nutro when he was a pup. It is one of 3 or 4 brands my vet carries. Having had a bad experience with another brand which I tried a year or two ago, I stick with what she recommends. I know that Nutro is a brand I can trust. While he would always would prefer bacon, he has 20 pounds to lose. I like making my dog happy but it is no good if I am making him unhealthy.
When the box arrived from Amazon he circled it, and stood excitedly while I opened it. I think he recognized the smell. My guess is that it is fresher than supermarket brands. My dog loves chicken, maybe even more than beef, so that might be what did it. He has been on a diet for close to a week now and has gotten very clever about showing me what he wants (actually tapping the container of dog biscuits since I was so slow to take a hint) he is happy with the Nutro. I am too because I do not have to worry about the quality of the ingredients, and I know that he is getting the vitamins and protein he needs, without a lot of added bulk. He is a young and active dog, so that is important. Chicken is the first ingredient, which is not something you see often on dry food. I don't think I have ever seen it before. Knowing that makes me feel less like I am depriving him, feeding him dog food. (I am sure that my vet would agree with that statement) ;)
I got him a good start with nutro when he was a pup, though I slipped a bit once he passed a year of age, giving him treats he should not have, or at least too many. At age 2, that is not far behind him, but he is already overweight, so we need to correct that before he gets fat. Nobody likes being on a diet, my dog included, but having a dry foood which is mostly chicken is makingt that process a lot easier, and he chose it himself!
