update: 02/17/14
so i setup up my bluetooth dongle today and have successfully synced my playpad with my laptop(satellite a200 with 32 bit windows vista). after windows found drivers for it i loaded up xpadder to see how things would map out and as it turns out not great but better then i expected. iv been able to map both analog sticks and there push down buttons, the ABXY buttons, bumpers and the start button. unfortunatly the d pad is registering as keyboard directional keys and cant be used in xpadder. the triggers just dont work. a interesting thing to note, the left analog stick will only register as a d pad in xpadder. all of this weirdness is more then likely bad drivers and nyko will probably never make any for windows. i can rig this thing in zdoom to about 90% functionality as i can just bind the d pad as keyboard keys but still no triggers. owell, maybe ill find a way.
Update 2014:
So my phone had been upgraded to 4.3 and my controller stop giving a full connection. I tried the 4.3 firmware update app but I couldnt get it to work, so I went back to trying to connect it as is. I thought maybe trying to connect it in mouse mode might do the trick and as soon as I unpaired the controller, switched to mouse mode and pair again it recognized it as a mouse and gave full connection! While still connected this way I moved the switch back to hid mode and it started working as a hid controller again. Easy fix :)
Update 11/9/14:
Got the latest firmware update not by way of the googleplay app but from a downloadable source for the pc (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nrbp4fefwwu2g6l/IYv8irXZaU). now that that the firmware is 4.3 i had to remap the controller in all my apps, but its not that big of a deal to me. tested it with xpadder on windows and it maps out almost like a normal controller now but the triggers still dont work in windows :(
However, setup is pretty difficult. I had to toy around with my Bluetooth settings and the nyko app for 45 minutes to an hour until I finally got it to work. Most of it was my own negligence, but it still is a decently confusing peace of hardware. If you have a short temper for technology, you may not want it, but I can assure you if you stick through it it's well worth it. Everybody who couldn't get it set up probably didn't try long or hard enough, because it is a complete injustice that this is rated so low.
However I have only had it for about 30 hours now, so if I get problems soon I will report them, but it doesn't look like I'll have too.
However, I feel they really need to fire their Quality Control staff. In my many years ordering from Amazon, this is the first product that arrived DOA. The gamepad would not hold a battery charge --- the charging light would flicker. So, while it was charging, I tried to pair it with my phone. Ten attempts, following their directions, failed. When it "succeeded," Nyko's own software did not recognize the gamepad. Nor did any games I had see it.
So, I exchanged it for another one, assuming it was a fluke. This one looked promising, its lights came on as it was charging. Yet it, too, refused to hold a battery charge. By "refused to hold," I mean "As soon as you unplug it from a powered micro USB cord, the device shuts off" This time, when I went to pair the device, my phone did not even see the gamepad on Bluetooth.
After two failures in a row, I decided to return this for good and will not ever buy a Nyko product in the future. Mistakes happen, but a quick Google search shows a host of similar issues worldwide --- device not holding a charge, or not pairing. Now, if you get a working gamepad, it's probably a fantastic product. But my poor experience with these 2 gamepads gives me no faith in the company. Steer clear of this company's products --- it's better to pay more for a gamepad that actually works like it says it does.
If you really are in love with this company and the gamepad design, I highly recommend purchasing it from a local retailer, where you can quickly exchange it if it's defective. This way, by trail and error, you'll eventually get a great gamepad.
