So this literally took me 3.5 hours to get working. I can completely understand how people could think this doesn't work. I'm very tech savy and completely understood how to set the correct COM port. That part was very easy. Here's what I ran into:
1. The cable came with a cd. It was a blank CD-R. Seriously. Don't expect drivers that work.
2. When I plugged the cable into my laptop there was a red LED that lite up right away. It doesn't flicker, blink, or change color at any point.
3. My laptop didn't find drivers for the device automatically (Win7 Pro 64bit)
4. I followed a few people's links from here on Amazon to download the drivers directly and quickly found them.
5. Once the driver was installed the COM port was set to 3 I plugged it into the car and ran the test in VCDS Lite from Ross-Tech. This is where I was hung up for 2 hours. The test came back with: Port-OK but "Interface Not Found". I tried close to a hundred different things including checking my firewall, changing to all ports, and tons of other stuff.
6. After I gave up on that I was ready to destroy the cable and light my car on fire. But in desperation I took the cable inside and plugged it into my desktop computer - Thank God! My desktop (Same operating system but on an intel chip instead of an AMD) used windows update and found the right driver! It was VERY different from the website people here suggested. In fact, the site that the driver was signed by was completely in Chinese.
7. I went back to my laptop and forced it to use windows update to find the driver (after uninstalling the wrong one) and viola! It found the correct driver.
8. Hooked the cable back up to the car (it worked for me without the key, with the key, and while running) and ran the test and everything came up roses.
So, the cable worked perfectly for me. No issues whatsoever once I had the correct driver.
More information: I went to Ross-tech's website and downloaded the VCDS-Lite software directly from them. The ***FREE*** version of this allowed me to do everything I wanted to do. The software acknowledges that the cable is *NOT* Ross-Tech but does not limit it's use in setting and reading codes. It does require some research (I found it on audizine) to know all the codes to input to make the changes.
I drive an Audi A4 B7 2008 and did all of the following mods. A few of them took 2-3 non-consecutive tries to have them record for some reason, but they all worked.
1. Turned off the seatbelt chime
2. Turned off the Door chime (converts to km and 24hr time, but easily changed in the car's menu)
3. Enabled high beams WITH fog lights
4. Enabled the windows up and down with the key fob
5. Enable Euro lights (turns off the ambers unless your turn signal is on)
6. Changed the car to unlock all doors with a single click on the fob
Couldn't do with free version but could if I paid $100 to Ross-tech to register the software
1. Change brightness of Tail Lights
2. Change the interval of Wipers
Last note, this is the best less than ten bucks I've ever spent. I would have paid a hundred bucks to turn off the seatbelt chime since it gives so many false alarms. My dealership wouldn't disable safety features though so I had no choice. I may pay for the lite version of this software if I ever have engine codes to read or clear. I'm not sure why it was impossible to find out if I could change codes for free. None of the blogs said it directly and Ross-tech tells you that you have to pay to makes changes even though it let me do everything for free.
