In my quest to watch a varied selection of movies I randomly made a grab at this one. A good flick. I was thrilled from the get-go when it opened with a booming spoken word recital of a Robert Service poem, the bard of the Yukon. The movie had drama, stilted romance, some Yukon brawling, and a collection of gold-claimers ranging from bearded wilderness men to comic figures in search of not only adventure but the next drink. The scenery was rich and they put on a pretty good "Yukon" - there were also some folks about up to no good, which always makes for a good story.

As an aside I'd like to add this seemingly nondescript film also contained one of the more frenzied - and realistic - fistfight scenes I have ever seen in a movie. That and the nifty though predictable ending pushed this up to a 4 star affair for me, while I had decided 80% in that i was going to go with 3 stars as though I liked the movie, its not something I will be revisiting time and time again. Lets put it this way, if you have any interest at all when it is over you will not regret the time, methinks.

A few side notes - this movie has made me a June Carlson fan (70 years after the fact at that) but though her "mom's" name carried the film I was not enamored with the Queen. My favorite character was Pop Willard, though I can see this one winning a lot of people over to the side of Grub and Stake.

I will say this though - looking back on it - the moral of the movie seemed to be if you are not a tough guy do not even think you are getting the girl, which may be met with a raised eyebrow or a sense of derision all these years later. But hey, it was the Yukon!

This movie was a pleasant surprise. The writing is clean and effective, and the acting quite good. The one false note was the actress playing the daughter; she was poor to the point of being a major distraction. However, Charles Bickford and Irene Rich were magnificent, and well worth watching. As with most of these older movies, we now find the plot predictable; but understanding the time and culture in which they are made adds to my appreciation. The same is true of any projection and sound mistakes which occur, as some do here. Parts of the film were quite funny; and of course, it all comes out fine. I did very much enjoy the experience.

Melvin Lang is as good a villian as you could wish for. Outstanding supporting actor, Charles Bickford, gets the leading man role in this one, demonstrating that he should have had the lead more often. The plot may seem a little old, but remember the age of this movie. The plot wasn't so old then.

For a hour and 20 min it was not a waste of time. I must admit, it is a bit hard to believe a river boat in the Yukon back then.

Why is it that the bad guy always is a saloon owner?
