This drive is excellent -- but ignore the reviews that refer to the hypothetical 1,500MB/sec numbers. It's really a 700MB/sec drive (which is why I subtracted 3 stars).

OCZ advertises this drive as having a 1,500MB/sec read speed, using the ATTO benchmarking tool (ATTO lists OCZ as one of their partners). The problem is that the 1,500MB/sec number comes from reading/writing files with all zeroes. Since the RevoDrive compresses data, the more compressible the data, the higher numbers you'll see -- and a file of all zeroes is the most compressible data possible (WinZIP compresses those files over 99.9%). Even a 20 year old hard drive could easily achieve 1,500MB/sec (or even 15,000MB/sec) if it used compression.

So with compression, test results using all zeroes are meaningless. It's no different than a hard drive manufacturer stating that their hard drive is 10TB, when in reality it is a 1TB hard drive that compresses files. The actual number depends on the type of data you have.

Like everyone else, I did get 1,500MB/sec reads using ATTO. Since the ATTO benchmarking tool defaults to all zeroes, however, that number is meaningless. Fortunately, ATTO can be set up to use random data (you need to choose "I/O Comparison" to access the "Test Pattern" options, and choose "Random"). Guess what? The same benchmarking tool that OCZ uses to advertise 1,500MB/sec confirms that this is really a ~700MB/sec read drive!

Worse, OCZ claims that the ~700MB/sec performance review sites show is due to mysterious "queue depth." But with ATTO benchmarking it at 1,500MB/sec using all zeroes and 700MB/sec using random data, there is now proof that the 700MB numbers are the real-life numbers, and queue depth isn't a factor for performance.

I was planning to max out my gaming rig and thus did some research on PCI-E SSD to find one that can replace my Vertex 3 SSD drive.

Eventually narrowed down to the OCZ revodrive 3 X2 which is effectively a RAID-0 setup on a single PCI-E card with specs that seem to promise top performance of 1.5GB/S read and 1.225GB/s write which is quite top of the line.

Bought the drive, flashed the firmware to latest version 2.11 and gave it a run with Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything went well and after some runs of real life applications and games, the performance is not distinctly different from that of the Vertex 3 as per what I read from the web.

In some cases where there were intensive I/Os, the speed is faster on the revodrive though so its beauty will only show in such high load cases. So if you have a lot of such applications that can drive the max out, this will be the SSD to go.

Do note that as this is going to be detected as a standalone RAID device, it will add about 10 secs or so to your overall boot time.

This card redefines what I have previously long considered to be the biggest bottleneck in a modern PC. To say that it's fast is inaccurate as it gives only a one dimensional perspective as to what this card actually provides. Yes it's fast, but that's a given considering what it is. What really surprised me and has me thinking differently about PC storage is the sheer amount of BANDWIDTH it has. Many review sites provide benchmark results that are unusual for stored media. Small files and smaller data sets transfer at an unexceptional data rate, somewhere around 400-500MB per second. That's nothing exceptional for a modern SSD Drive. Where it get's interesting is when it moves large volumes of LARGE datasets/files. When you start to move large numbers of 1MB and larger files through it it ramps up to the 1500 MBPS range. As one website reviewer described "you can transfer 1100 1 MB files a SECOND".

This card is about the need for data storage bandwidth. Do you need fast access to a large amount of large files? this card will do that... very, very well.

Do you need fast access to small files? A cheaper SSD drive will do that just as well.

Most people understand the advantages of a solid state drive by now. Instant seek times, incredible data transfer rates, and no moving parts means better resistance to shock and less heat and vibration and completely silent operation.

This takes it one step further by eliminating the bottleneck that's impacted SSD's - the SATA interface. PCIe is a much much quicker interface than SATA - going straight into the motherboard.

I did my research before buying this, so installation was a breeze. You just need to load drivers during the Window's installation (you do it right before you choose which drive to install onto). After you load the drivers this drive should appear, and then you should select it as your boot drive. I used a USB flash drive to load the drivers.

After install I was getting 1450mb/s reads and 1150mb/s writes. After filling the drive up a bit more I was getting 1475mb/s reads and 1125mb/s writes.

Either way, the transfer rates of this drive are INCREDIBLE. Things install so quickly it's hard to believe. Sometimes you think it might have stopped early due to an error.

Obviously a con is the price in general and price per capacity, so you will likely need a more traditional drive for general storage. I used two WD 2TB drives in RAID 1 for data security.

Though I haven't personally experienced it, I've read that this drive gets hot. I have a 120mm fan blowing 70CFM straight onto it and my case in general has well over 300CFM of airflow through it (thus why I haven't experienced it getting hot). However, this is something to keep in mind if you purchase this card.

All in all, if you can afford it, buy it, you won't regret it. Maxed out the windows experience index at 7.9 (I'm sure it'd be a 15.9 if the scale went that high).
