I purchased this item in February 2009 off Amazon (for $50 less than what it's selling for now - so much for the theory that electronics always get cheaper over time).

This is what they call a 1st Generation SSD, and it utilizes a JMicron controller, which is now known to have poor disk-write performance (specifically on random writes). For a substantial majority of people, what this translate to is that this drive will stutter and hesitate often when it's accessed for frequent writing tasks, resulting in a poor user experience, particularly if used as a system drive. The reason why this happens is beyond the scope of this review - suffice to say that it has to do with partition misalignments, the XP operating system, write amplification, and free-space fragmentation. An expert technical treatise can be found on the manufacturer (OCZ) support forums, as well as on [...].

Given all that, I was able to make mine work the way I wanted it to (that is to say, fast!) but not without applying a few tweaks, including a cache system courtesy of Microsoft's Steadystate program (free on their website).

Bottom line: you will not be able to drop this drive into your computer and expect it to work just like a super-fast version of your hard drive. If you use XP, you will have to research and apply a number of enhancements to make it work up to your expectations, but it can be done. This drive will fare much better under Vista and especially Windows 7, which is much more SSD-friendly.

Other considerations: Recently, JMicron released an updated firmware version for the controller (Google "FWUPD_090508s.rar") which by all accounts resolves the stuttering/hesitating issues.

Well im back using Western-Digital 1-TB My Books to entrust my data upon. I have never had one fail on me to date, plus they come with a 2 yr replacement warrenty. OCZ's ssd drive listed above never had access times as fast as the WD my book, the SSD would drop in a out constantly from something as simple as moving the drive, lifting the drive, or lifting your laptop and inch from the ground. The OCZ ssd lasted a total of one month before totsl failure. The box says this cheap junk drive has a MTBF of 1.5 million hrs, thats obviously a lie. I could not send it back for a refund becasue I cashed in a rebate offered by OCZ when I was stupid enough to buy this drive. Apprarently they put the rebate in place to screw any customers out of returing this faulty drive, hence proof they made a shotty, unreliable ssd. Anyhow I used this drive, it lived for only a month in almost ideal conditions, very minor dust, no moisture, good room temp, and just sitting on a clean desk. If it died in one month in those conditions, how would it last anywhere else for very long....it wont. This drive was a displeasure to use and pay for. The WD mybook has much more space (1TB), does not drop out, has an on screen indicator telling you that temp/storage is ok, and comes with great replacement warrenty, faster access times and is cheeper than this OCZ price of junk.

Bottem line: This drive is junk, way to expencive, 1TB WD hd with more tech life is cheaper than this failed OCZ ssd. It will be a long time before I waste anymore money on an ssd, I will be waiting a few years until they are developed to last more than a month at twice the price of non-failing conventional hd's. Plus the next time I decide ti try an SSD it definatly wont be from OCZ.

I followed the direction given on some website about how to "downgrade" the Vista so the drive will function optimally. It works! My Lenovo X61 Tablet is running smoothly without any problem. If you want to unleashed the true power of a tablet pc, get this and you'll not regret.
