Featuring new architecture, the Core Series SSD V2 will be available in up to a massive 250GB capacity and delivers enhanced speeds of up to 170 MB/s read and 98 MB/s write speeds with an improved seek time of less than 0.2-0.3ms, making the Core V2 significantly faster when it comes to both Read/Write and seek-time performance. The addition of a mini-USB port also makes it possible for customers in the field to update the Core V2¿s firmware should new versions become available, to further enhance compatibility or performance with future platforms. The OCZ Core Series V2 delivers additional performance and reliability of the latest SSDs at a 50% less price per gigabyte than other high speed offerings currently on the market. The Core Series is ideal for an energy-efficient mobile or a RAID configured desktop to provide blazing speeds and advanced access and seek times. Because SSD drives feature no moving parts, the Core Series V2 will keep your laptop or desktop environment cool and quiet and provide a durable alternative and superior shock resistance. With even greater capacities up to 250GB, Core Series V2 now offers sufficient storage for large media files. Designed for ultimate reliability, Core V2 SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. All Core Series SSD drives come backed a two year warranty and OCZ¿s legendary service and support.
Top Customer Reviews
This is what they call a 1st Generation SSD, and it utilizes a JMicron controller, which is now known to have poor disk-write performance (specifically on random writes). For a substantial majority of people, what this translate to is that this drive will stutter and hesitate often when it's accessed for frequent writing tasks, resulting in a poor user experience, particularly if used as a system drive. The reason why this happens is beyond the scope of this review - suffice to say that it has to do with partition misalignments, the XP operating system, write amplification, and free-space fragmentation. An expert technical treatise can be found on the manufacturer (OCZ) support forums, as well as on [...].
Given all that, I was able to make mine work the way I wanted it to (that is to say, fast!) but not without applying a few tweaks, including a cache system courtesy of Microsoft's Steadystate program (free on their website).
Bottom line: you will not be able to drop this drive into your computer and expect it to work just like a super-fast version of your hard drive. If you use XP, you will have to research and apply a number of enhancements to make it work up to your expectations, but it can be done. This drive will fare much better under Vista and especially Windows 7, which is much more SSD-friendly.
Other considerations: Recently, JMicron released an updated firmware version for the controller (Google "FWUPD_090508s.rar") which by all accounts resolves the stuttering/hesitating issues. However, for some inexplicable reason, the new firmware was not officially released to OCZ, so if you update, the warranty will be voided.
Also, there's not much value to buying this Gen. 1 SSD at its currently listed price. The OCZ Vertez 60GB, a Gen. 2 SSD, currently sells for only about $35 more, but has none of the ills of this unit. The Vertex utilizes a different controller, and is documented as being one of the top performing SSDs available. Its superior performance right out of the box gives one no real reason to select the Core 2 over the Vertex at this time.
Bottem line: This drive is junk, way to expencive, 1TB WD hd with more tech life is cheaper than this failed OCZ ssd. It will be a long time before I waste anymore money on an ssd, I will be waiting a few years until they are developed to last more than a month at twice the price of non-failing conventional hd's. Plus the next time I decide ti try an SSD it definatly wont be from OCZ. I just ordered a Dell XPS and initially opted for an 256 gb SSD, I have since changed the order to a 320 GB Sata II after this OCZ ssd failed miserably and reminded me I was wasting my money.
Avoid this drive. Wait a few years before buying an SSD it will save you cash and data loss until they are developed better.
