Works and is fast

Good product.
Easy to install. Works as advertised.
I still have my old hard drive intact and can boot from either the HD or this SSD.
This SSD is so much faster it's addictive. I rarely go to the HD.
My only complaint: price keeps dropping. :mad:
3 months ago this was priced at $190. It went on sale for $150 after rebates, so I took the plunge.
Now it's at $130! Maybe I'll just buy another one when it gets down to $100.
See comments for some speed results.

EDIT: I did experience a few BSOD. I didn't know what to attribute that to as they seemed random. The only commonality was that they occurred a few minutes after the computer had waken up from sleep.
Reading some of the 1 star reviews, it appears the BSOD is attributable to this SSD. Something to watch out for.
I'm revising my rating down to 4 stars until further findings.

UPDATE: after installing their latest firmware version the BSODs after waking up disappeared.

Trimmed Away

I must confess to a sense of trepidation in using an SSD as the bootup drive because of stories I had heard about TRIM and slow downs in performance over time. So far it has been excellent. The bootup time to Wiindows is very quick ~25 seconds or so. What I have done differently is only install Windows 7x64 and some other main apps on the SSD. All other apps start from the D drive which is a 1TB WD Caviar Black HD. As this drive is limited in space you should exercise some discipline in installaing apps. For example, all my desktop data is stored on the D Drive with shortcuts to the actual data folder on the SSD. Most users will never know as effectively, the data is on the desktop. This is not just because of space limitations but also resiudal concerns about reliability. Time will tell but in the meantime I am enjoying fast bootsups and immediate opening of apps.

Great Drive

I have 2 of these Vertex 3 120GB drives in 2 very different computer systems. The first system is for gaming, i7 2600K, Gigabyte MB, GTX 560Ti or HD 7850 (I switch vid cards once in a while, will upgrade to GTX 670 soon when prices come down), OCZ 600w PSU, 150GB Velociraptor, 120GB Vertex 3. Boot times and game load times are incredible even compared to a Velociraptor which is still noticeably faster than most 7200rpm HDs. Second system is for CAD/Photoshop/video editing, 965BE, Gigabyte MB, HD 6870, Corsair 650w PSU, 1TB Caviar Black, 120GB Vertex 3. Using Win 7 OS on both systems, Home Premium on one, Professional on the other. These systems have been running great for the last 6-8 months with no BSOD or any crashes of any kind.

I also have a 120GB Vertex 2 which is slower but not by much running on my wife's system (old Core2Duo E8400, Gigabyte MB) and it has not crashed/BSOD on her in over a year.

I also have 2 Crucial m4 256GB SSD's and while they are not as fast as the Vertex 3, they were cheaper so couldn't pass them up (Amazon had a sale a few weeks ago). Also have a Patriot WildFire 240GB that I found on sale for $150 which is faster than I would have guessed, installed on my son's laptop and no problems after 4 months. One of the Crucial m4's has BSOD a few times in the pass month on my testing system so still trying to track down the problem, the other has worked great in the above gaming system.

I've done most of the recommend things for working with SSD's: turn of hibernation/sleep mode, AHCI, reduce/move page files, turn of indexing, update firmware, etc and have not had any bad experiences with them and would recommend them to all. I would recommend anyone who is going to install a SSD on their system do some research on setting up the system to work with the SSD such as enabling ACHI, TRIM, disabling sleep/hibernation, sufficient RAM (8+ GBs), etc.

Fast, decently priced; but Mac users, beware of caveats

This is my first SSD. After reading through so very many reviews on Amazon, NewEgg, TigerDirect and various forums, I decided to got with this via Amazon's Warehouse Deals due to pricing and capacity.

Price was right, shipment was quick, as is the drive. A noticeable difference. However, I am currently using a MacBook5,1 (MB466) and there are a few things you need to be aware of before walking into this.

1.) There are no native means by which to update firmware on OS X. There are, however, several autonomous Linux boot packages that OCZ has been providing in their support forums that work beautifully if you know what you're doing. Be prepared to:
-Burn your own boot discs with a provided .ISO image
-Read, read and read the forums.

2.) On a variety of Macs, this drive suffers from a bug that only allows it a SATA link of 1.5G/s vs the computer and drive's capability of a 3.0G/s link. This can be fixed with a patch that OCZ employees developed, which can be installed in the method described in item 1.) More info at the link below:

Without the fix, I was experiencing bursts of decent speeds, but beachballs/hangs/freezes all the damn time. Something as minor as clicking on a menu would trigger a 15-30 second freeze. Insanity. Since I've applied the fix, however, things appear to be working great. Time will tell, though.

Other remarks: you may be tempted to use one of the many TRIM enabling hacks or applications out there to get past the issues mentioned above. Don't. My understanding is that these SandForce-based SSDs have their own inbuilt methods of cleaning the drive up (something to do with having it's own garbage collection and its overprovisioning ), so they wouldn't benefit from TRIM -anyway-. However, when I applied the hack, it suffered from more hangups and freezes than it did without,

All in all, the product felt a little halfbaked in its release. The lack of easy Mac integration definitely strikes me as strange; however, the spectacular support on the forum makes up for it, in my opinion. If you want to save yourself any of my headaches though, it may be worth looking into an OWC drive or something.
