This is one of the simplest (and least-expensive) automotive tools I've purchased, but it is worth the $10 I paid. I used to use a giant C-Clamp (about 5x heavier than this spreader, and more awkward to boot) to push the piston back in on my disc brakes. Now I use this spreader, as it's a little simpler and easier to use.

Just stick the large metal piece in the brake, take one of the old pads and place it against the piston, and tighten the spreader until you begin pushing the piston back in. Just be careful to not push too far (which is easy to do with this spreader, since it's so easy to screw in compared to my C-Clamp), or the gasket around the piston might squish out in a weird way!

Best of luck!

Just what I needed to help reset the brake caliper on both my Silverado and Uplander van. It does take a bit of elbow grease to turn the knob. Retain one of the old pads and use it to help keep the entire caliper level as you turn.

Most previous units I've had for this purpose actually have two cross pieces and they both expand in opposite directions to compress the piston without any additional tools needed. With this unit I had to actually put a wrench cross ways on the piston and let the center bolt push into it because the bolt itself wasn't long enough to touch the piston side by itself. I really wasn't paying attention when I bought this one, I thought they all worked basically the same. It did work, but there are better units out there, you might have to pay a little more but in the long run it might be worth it. If I had to get another cheap unit like this, I'd try to find one with a longer center bolt.

Purchased this OEM pad spreader after years of using a large C clamp to retract the pistons. Lucky I did for this brake job, as the bleeder screws were on the rear of the piston cup, and a C clamp would not have worked. I should have bought this a long time ago. I have purchased OEM tools in the past, and have been very satisfied with their performance compared to their cost. Would rate them below Snap On, and Mac tools of course, but much better than any cheap Chinese tool from your local store. A similar quality to the Crafstman brand, and they carry a lifetime warranty, too. Other cheap similar pad spreader reviews indicated the knob was prone to breaking, or slipping around the threaded shaft. I feel this is a non issue with this tool, as it feels very precise and stoudt while turning the knob. Purchase this and you will not be dissapointed.

I bought this at AutoZ0ne for four.99 on sale and bought a Lisle brand one from Oreally's to try them both. The lisle brand had a thread crossed and I returned it after doing one side of my minivan. The OEM brand was easy to use and of similar build quality minus the crossed thread. I was able to use the OEM brake pad spreader with one hand, while the other held the caliper. Great investment for under 10 bucks.

I was thinking this plastic would be *cheap*, but it is far from it. The ABS plastic is SOLID. You do need to leave one brake shoe in while using the spreader, but that's just fine. It's a great, inexpensive option to the pricey ones.

I don't often write one star reviews. This may be my only one but this turd really deserves it. It left me stranded in the middle of a big job. It was impossible for me to do what this tool claims it will do. It would not compress my rear brake piston. I tried to get a strap wrench on it and it just spun but would not squeeze the piston. This thing may work on a motorcycle or something with weak breaks but for a car it's complete junk. I tossed it in the garbage the first day I tried to use it. I was able to rent a real tool from Autozone which did the job in a snap. In short, pay a little more and buy a real tool.

This makes compressing the caliper pistons for a pad replacement a bit easier than using a C clamp or Channel Locks which is what I have always done in the past. Specialty tools always make the job easier. I have been slowly adding specialty tools to my toolbox and this is one I have had my eye on for a while now, at a cost of under 10 bucks I couldn't pass it up. This tool seems to be decent quality and should last for some time, the plastic/nylon handle seems to be good quality and sturdy, this is the only part of the assembly I could see wearing out. The OEM brand name is stamped on the handle so they take pride in their name and it isn't a generic one.
