OFF GRID: ESCAPE FROM THE SURVEILLANCE STATE Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 315 ratings

From the halls of D.C. to the remote shores of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, OFF GRID is a wild ride through a dystopian near future of mass surveillance.

In the wake of a global calamity, the economy collapses. The Feds respond by wielding every power of the Welfare State to control the populace. A key tool is
PivPal, an indispensable smartphone used to track citizens. As civil liberties crumble, resistance is relegated to flyover country whose residents—derided as off-gridders—cling to the time-honored virtues of freedom, self-reliance, and charity. Against this backdrop, Jenny Hernandez struggles to keep her rural church community nourished and safe. Hiding from the Feds, a team of inventors, and Jenny’s ex, arrive to complete the amazing plasma drive. They bring hope, but also the watchful eye of Big Brother. With the authorities closing in, local law enforcement must choose sides.

In the tradition of Atlas Shrugged, OFF GRID is philosophical fiction, wrapped in a political thriller, with a sci-fi/romance twist.

J. P. Redding has a lifelong attachment to the state of Michigan both as a vacationer and resident. While majoring in Political Science at a major university, he delved into classical political philosophies as well as socialist and neo-Marxist theory (which he rejected). During college, Redding took a stab at creative writing by enrolling in an advanced seminar. The results were mixed: his fellow students were encouraging, the professor less so. Subsequently, he went on to receive a master’s degree in business administration.

Redding’s business experience ranges from corporate executive to startup entrepreneur. He had a 14-year career with a Fortune 100 company, gaining first-hand knowledge of large bureaucracies in a regulated industry. More recently, Redding co-founded a software business that he nurtured into an INC 500 Company – one of the fastest-growing, privately held companies in the U.S. He is an inventor with multiple patents.

Redding enjoys extreme watersports including windsurfing, kiteboarding, and SUP surfing. OFF GRID is his first novel.

Suspenseful, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Good characters and story lines paired with a shocking yet unsurprising view into how easy it would be to cross over to a tyrannical state.

I couldn’t put this book down, however, I didn’t care for the ending because it left you hanging! I hope that there is a sequel to this book! Because of that, I gave it four stars!

Intriguing idea for a story with strong characters. The only issue was how the book ended as it didn’t feel like a natural stopping point, even if it’s meant to be a cliffhanger. Overall, a fun read.

I am not one to read survivalist fiction but was recommended this book by a friend. Once it got going, I really didn't want to put it down! I found myself thinking about it for days after reading and wanting more.

At first there were a lot of characters with different points of view but as the story progressed, it all came together in what proved to be a realistic and intriguing story about politics, privacy, technology, and freedom. This is a great read that will definitely spur some internal contemplation on society and where we are headed. The characters were relatable and I found my self really rooting for them to make it through. I love a good open ending as well as it gives me a chance to contemplate what I want to happen.

I really hope he writes another and will definitely be reading more of this genre going forward.

I have read so many of these types of books that I have become somewhat jaded. I can usually tell within about twenty minutes if the book is worth finishing - I started this on a whim because I have found either an authors first book is really well done or it’s a total rush job and not worth finishing. I’m happy to say I couldn’t stop reading this book - very engaging and well thought out!! I’ve reread it again just to be sure - lol!

A very easy read with some religious overtones (which did not bother me) and somewhat simplistic. But then, the constitutional concepts are very simplistic but powerful, if adhered to as our founders intended. This is a moralistic tale of how our republic can be easily derailed by good intentions and a very human lust for power. It started with a plausible set of circumstances. It is a plea to not surrender our freedoms for security.

This was a well written book, regarding things to possibly come in the not too distant future… I gave a five star because of the Content, however for a Christian adaptation, the cuss words could’ve been left out, and shacking up without the bonds of marriage, is not what the Bible teaches! Overall, I’ll give it a five star!

Pros: I loved the plot, the pacing, and the tension. Cons: There were WAY too many grammatical errors. (It's "shudder," not shutter, for one.) I lost count of the made up compound words. The technical jargon surrounding the kite-boarding was far too in-depth for standard readers, and the ending absolutely sucked. ****SPOILER ALER*** Too many unanswered questions. No closure on Meg. No closure on the release of the plasma specs. No closure on Tommy wandering around Manhattan. And as a follower of Jesus who selected this book because it's labeled Christian fiction, I was disappointed in much of the content.

This was an interesting read considering the times we find ourselves in, however if you were expecting a Christian take on the issue your going to be disappointed There is foul language , sleeping around between"Christians" and attitudes that have nothing to do with God or the Church
