Choose The Correct Spinning Reel Size For Your Bait Fishing
Where Trout And Panfish Rule: ABF-20b
Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reels begin at size 20, perfect for baiting trout and panfish on small ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Cast floating trout baits on slip sinkers, fish live minnows under floats for aggressive crappie, this reel is perfect for 4- to 8-pound test line.
General Freshwater: ABF-30b and ABF-40b
Walleye, catfish and bass match well to size 30 and 40 Avenger Baitfeeders. If 8-to-12-pound line is correct for the fishery, these are the proper size reels. The size 40 also crosses over to light inshore applications in saltwater fishing.
When Big Baits Equal Big Fish: ABF-55b and ABF-65b
Large live baits and large predatory fish like pike, musky, striped bass and trophy catfish can require a lot of line capacity on spinning reels. The Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reel in sizes 55 and 65 hold plenty of line for trophy freshwater fish and most saltwater species.
Fishing The Open Ocean- ABF-65b and ABF-80b
You can't be quite sure what will eat your bait in the ocean. It could be a small dolphin fish, it could be a sailfish. In either case, size 65 and 80 Okuma Baitfeeders are the largest spinning reels in the family, ready for fast-moving fish that sprint towards the horizon.
Okuma Baitfeeder Technology
Let 'Em Eat
When fishing live baits, chunk baits, worms, insects or dough baits, the best fishing success often comes from allowing fish to secure a solid hold of the bait without feeling the resistance of the fishing rod and gear. This is difficult to accomplish with traditional spinning reels. Okuma Baitfeeding Technology is the ultimate bait fishing solution. Featuring a secondary drag system in the rear of the reel, the Baitfeeder switch completely disengages the primary drag system. With the bail of the reel closed and the line remaining well under control, the Baitfeeder switch allows line to pay out under an adjustable amount of tension. Once the fish has had time to completely eat a bait, a turn of the reel handle disengages the baitfeeder system, re-engages the primary drag system and the fish can be hooked and landed with total control.

Baitfeeding spinning reels lend tremendous function to anglers. And this is not just in saltwater fisheries where baitfeeding spinning reels allow live baits to swim uninhibited. Use of baitfeeders are expanding dramatically in freshwater applications also, in fisheries like trout and catfish where it's to the angler's advantage to ensure fish have a solid hold of baits before setting the hook. For 2015, Okuma's venerable Avenger ABF spinning reels have undergone numerous upgrades to form and function.

Also the reel is considerably cheaper built than previous Okuma reels. It's almost like a different company is making them and quality is no longer something they care about.
All plastic, the line guide flip feels flimsy and the overall reel feels very cheap in the hand. I saw complaints on other fishing outlets reviews, that the reel arm (the part that attaches your reel to the rod) is also cheap plastic and will literally brake off from your rod.
Water sealing is none existent. I caught a fish, and as I laid down my rod for sec, just the reel sitting on the ground for a minute, I got home and the reel is full of dirt. Appearently, the rear "baitrunner" brake dial is not sealed and dirt will get inside easily, ruining the whole thing. I just took it apart to get all the dirt out, it was loaded at the rear brake gears, I had to literally wash out the entire reel with WD40 and grease it back on. On that subject, the reel had ZERO grease in it! There is no lubrication whatsoever. Maybe a tiny bit of oil I saw, but no grease. This reel like this, can't last very long. Zero care about dirt proofing, zero lubrication. Do the math. I won't even mention water proof, I'm not looking for that in a 50 dollar reel, but at least dirt proof it to a certain level?
Heck, some of the cheap no-brand Chinese models are better constructed for 30 dollars less! That's why I think it's overpriced.
If you got this reel now and using it, do yourself a favor and remove the side cover and grease the gears. I guarantee you won't see much inside, also check for dirt, which will make its way inside in little time!
I have at least 4 Okuma Avenger ABF-30bs (plus two other Okuma bait feeder reels). They are not the smoothest reels I have ever used, but they are a good deal for $50. I use the bait feed function all the time and it works well. I the bait feed when fishing bottom rigs on the Mississippi river and for lake trout in the BWCA. Also a nice feature if you want to slip bobber but need to take a break in the bushes. And again, any time you need to pay more attention to kids than a rod, you should have a bait feeder reel on it!
About 1% of the time the bait feed doesn't engage and I need to flip the lever again. But, there isn't a comparable reel for less than $150.
Also, I fish a lot. Usually a couple nights per week. I haven't worn one out yet. I pair them with rods from 6'6" up to 9'. They have caught large lake trout, big redhorse, buffalo, carp and even bass, walleye and pike.
