The look and feel of the mortar and pestle are good, it feels sturdy and does its job well.

My only issue was the box that the item came in, it was very thin cardboard and has no real internal packing other than two small pieces of cardboard preventing the mortar from hitting against the pestle. Thankfully this came in an order with multiple items so the entire box had some form of packing protecting it, if this was ordered on its own i would worry about it getting through the shipping process in one piece.

Sturdy And Useful Granite Mortal And Pestle

Most households don't need a mortal and pestle, but it can be handy if you cook a lot because eventually you will come across a recipe that requires you to mash something up.

For me, I use this mainly to mash up dried up chile, garlic, or peanuts (so far), to make some kind of sauce. The mortal is a thick and heavy granite bowl, and the pestle is made of the same material. I read somewhere that granite was the material of choice when owning one of these, which is why I chose granite. The granite is unpolished (not smooth) which allows for a more effective grind. The weight of the mortal allows it to stay in place pretty well when pounding on a counter. I prefer to place a paper towel under it because I don't want the unfinished texture to mark up my counter.

To clean, after you're done you should rinse it immediately in warm water and wash off everything; you don't want any foods to stay stuck in the cracks.

If you are a blooming chef that cooks frequently, you should have one of these in your arsenal of kitchen tools. Recommended.

My first mortar and pestle, and I love it! The granite is a nice gray and black, the inside is deep and nicely shaped that the food stays inside the mortar, and the inside is also smooth, with some small ridges that helps with crushing spices and grinding. It's a heavy piece of kitchen equipment, and one way to improve on the design is to add a small rubber foot so it does not slip and slide on the kitchen counter.

The reason for 4 stars is that the outside top 1/2 of the outside of the mortar is nice and smoothish but the bottom 1/2 is kinda jagged and rough. It looks as if QC didn't care about the lower half and whoever did the cutting left the bottom half looking as if it were shaped by two rocks smashing into the mortar. It's not a big deal, but for $30, I kinda wish they made the product uniform in quality. Additionally, the jagged portion as small pieces of granite falling off of it, even after washing it and using it. Hope it wont be a problem in the long run.

The package arrived with other items, but the pestle was broken. I love the mortar and want to keep it, but Amazon doesn't give the option to have contact with a human being to make the arrangements. Hopefully this can be resolved and is not the end of the world.

That being said, I really like the mortar. Nice weight and surface texture, I suspect will last for multiple generations. I had planned on using a large wooden pestle anyway, but it would be nice to get a small credit or refund due to the original being broken. After reading other reviews, seems this is a common problem and a change in packaging may be in order.

I seasoned it as recommended in the product description, and looking forward to using this quite a bit.

I wanted the unpolished version; however, the outside surface was very coarse, almost unpleasant. So I sanded the upper part of the bowl and the rim, using an orbital sander, 120 grit, just enough to improve the feel. Pestle too. It worked great, a huge improvement. I definitely recommend it. Now, I look forward to using it.

As I just removed from the box, I was disappointed that there were no "instructions" for the seasoning process, as well as helpful hints on certain items for first-time users of a pestle. Also you need instructions on how to OPEN THE BOX. On the outside of the box is says TO WASH IN WARM, SOAPY WATER!! However, the information regarding the product on the page where it is listed tells you to NOT USE SOAP!! So, I will see. I have not used it yet. It looks nice. However, the discrepancy of SOAP/NO SOAP is a little unsettling. Good luck!

I had to return the first one received as the pestle was broken, the return service from Amazon was just great ! I chose to return the defective set ( free of charge if returned within a set time period ), via the local post office using a 'QR Code' which Amazon sent me as part of the returns service using my Amazon account. Hermes Courier Service was also on offer if I chose but I didn't bother with that, and I've just received the replacement within 24 hours ! This one was fine, good quality, weighty, well polished on the outside of the pestle and mortar, and with an unpolished surface for the grinding surfaces. What's not to like ! Thanks Amazon for the return and replacement service, and a fine addition to replace our old worn mortar. I can see many years of service from this solid item. ( Sounds funny doesn't it, calling it solid when the first one I received had a broken pestle ? But I can truly attest to this being solid. I put the damage down to transportation somewhere in transit. Where ? Anyone's guess. ) We're pleased and this will get a lot of use !
