About the Author

Ben Sheehan is a former award-winning executive producer at Funny Or Die. This is a must read for every person who thinks they know what's in the U.S. Constitution. Ben Sheehan gives the actual text of the Constitution, then breaks it down in easy to understand language. The book is also full of insight and interpretations.
I am a high school U.S. Government/Civics teacher. I know the Constitution inside and out, forward and backward. I laughed many times reading this book because it uses so many explanatory analogies that I use almost word for word it's as if the author was a former student of mine.

Inexplicable expletives make this much less useful than it could be

When I first submitted a review of this book to Amazon, I made the mistake of citing several of the unnecessary words found on its pages and suggested it'd be a much more useful book without them. Amazon bounced the review on the basis of language, which tells you pretty much everything. You can guess what words (extreme adjectives and lazy nouns) I'm talking about, used often and gratuitously in a book that otherwise could've been recommended classroom reading. Thumbs up for explaining things clearly, providing contexts, identifying opinions as such and managing to inject some snarky humor while not taking sides, politically. But thumbs down for dumb word choices any reasonable editor would have nixed.

Calling this book a textbook feels borderline offensive, but I don’t know how else to describe a book that made me feel so much more familiar with the Constitution. Ben provided great insight into the building blocks of this country, what it all means today, + how to be a more engaged citizen overall. (And he did it in a very conversational way that makes me think the information has a better chance of sticking than it would have if I just re-read these documents on my own.)

What a treat! This is the Constitution like you've never read before -- and probably never understood either. It's easy to consume this entirely readable book in a couple of hours. By the end, you will know what every American should know about the Constitution, what the founders intended and how it plays out today. Fascinating historical tidbits abound along with unbiased, well-researched debates on current issues of critical import. Kudos to Ben Sheehan. It should be required reading for every American. They'd find it terrifically informative and funny.

Wow, I am blown away by this book! My parents grew up in other countries so I am a first generation US citizen. I always hated history and politics mostly because I couldn’t keep up with all the laws, rules, and regulations. I struggled to understand what the constitution says even as an adult! This book is genius. It’s given people like myself the ability to actually learn and understand our rights as citizens. It’s an easy read and should be in every school!
