Bosch style relays are the standard relay in custom wiring projects and many stock automotive, marine, and machine circuits. These 12V 5-pin relays are rated to handle 30A on normally closed pin 87a and 40A on normally open pin 87. That’s more than enough capacity to handle most common repairs and projects.

Weak relays, OK sockets

The description says that the relays are rated for 30 Amps. Based on 30+ years of working with relays, I’d say these are good for about 5 amps. Compared side-by-side with an Omron G8JN relay, the difference is like night and day. These relays are epoxied into their plastic housing. The epoxy is brittle and it breaks off at extreme temperatures, resulting in a failed seal. A G8JN relay has the plastic housing molded around the terminals to achieve a water-tight seal that lasts. These relays have small and poorly aligned contacts resulting in high resistance compared to a G8JN relay that keeps its larger contacts aligned well. The sockets that came with these relays are probably good for 30 Amps, but the relays themselves don’t come close to being good enough for 30-Amp loads. When used with a 20-amp pump motor, the relays heated up due to high contact resistance, burning the paint on the coil wire which quickly resulted in unreliable performance followed by total failure. If a 30-amp relay is really needed, the G8JN is a far better choice.

MISLEADING DESCRIPTION

The listing clearly says "Waterproof construction & heavy duty 12AWG wires for the main contact." The one I received has two 12 GA. wires labeled as "12 AWG" and one, the Yellow, is labeled "12 AWM." And one of the 16 ga. wires (Black) is AWG while the other (White) is AWM.
AWM means Appliance Wire Material which is not approved by the NEC for field installation, only for use within closed components.

This is a nice heavy duty relay.
This relay comes with no info. Most of the pins #'s are covered in adhesive and are difficult to read. So I will give the info here. Hopefully this will make your install easier.
There are two types of 5 pin relays. Type A and Type B. This is a Type B relay. This is noted by the position of pin 30. I was able to determine this because, lucky for me just enough of the 3 was peaking out from behind the adhesive, to allow me to determine pin 30 location. It is sort of the key or primmer to decoding relay types. (12 volt planet has a nice article on 5 pin relays, if you want professional advice. I am just a guy on amazon, so take my advice for what it is worth)

So I am wiring a reverse camera for my 2009 BMW E93 convertible. It did not come with a touch screen head unit, it came with an old school unit with only the basic digital screen. I updated my car with a 7 inch sat/nav with HD screen. Even though this car has pretty good visibility, the screen has backup camera capability, and Amazon offers a pretty cool back up camera that integrates into the tag light. So I figured why not. Well the reverse light is not a constant 12 volt, so I needed a relay to provide constant 12 volt power to the camera, and I use the reverse light as the on switch.
My set up:
Pin #30...constant 12 volt supply from a fused 15 amp supply line connected directly to my battery. BMW puts these in the trunk, right next to the tail light I am also tapping. (thanks BMW, easy peezy)
Pin #85 Ground...attach this to any ground lug on the car body
Pin #86 Switch source... for my BMW this is the black /violet wire to my tail light
Pin #87 the red wire on my camera

*****Some relays switch position #85 and #86, but form what I understand this is immaterial, because it is just either end of a switch, and so they are reversible, but your application may vary. THe pin positions for #85 ad #86 are unreadable in this relay.

The wires on this relay are much heavier gauge (12 & 16 gauge) than the 15 amp circuit I am supplying or the 2 amp draw I am using. But that is to be expected from a 40 amp relay. Just know when you buy butt end connectors, you will need them to fit a heavier gauge. Or by pass the wires and buy 6.3 mm female connectors to connect directly to the relay pins. This however will bypass the waterproofing built in to the male portion of this relay, with the actual wires on it.

The quality seems ok and fairly robust. But you can barely read the pins inside of the relay. They give you a layout of the pins on the product page plus I know the pins orders of a Bosch style relay anyways, but one thing that irked me a little bit is that they have the wires in the wrong place. The ground(black) wire should be Pin 85 and the positive(white) wire should be on Pin 86, they are reversed so you have to remember that when you go to wire it up. Otherwise, the quality looks like it would be really good.

I have used four of these well constructed relays to relieve the current load from lighting switches in my 1970 MGB Roadster. The waterproofing is excellent (on the relays, that is). Some users have noted that the black and white leads (ground and trigger, respectively) are reversed on these devices. This is easily corrected by removing the leads and swapping them. A small flat blade jeweler's screwdriver can be used to gently pry away an easily seen locking tab on the appropriate relay socket terminal while pushing the wire free. Bending the little tab back will facilitate re-locking the terminal in place after swapping the wires. Similarly, the yellow lead (terminal 87a) -- if not needed -- can be removed and the resulting hole plugged with silicone sealer

I am not a professional car electrician, but I have quite a lot of knowledge regarding this matter. I wanted a supplementary USB port working on A position ignition switch mode with some switch-off dellay. A relay is imperative in order to avoid too much power consumption and loss. For sure, using a waterproof system is always preferable in cars. Online LED store offered exactly what I needed and the system is working flawlessly. I am very pleased with their offer and I had to order it again, since my friends are putting a lot of pressure on me in order to make this port for their cars too.
The only thing I had to modify was the gauge of the connected wires because the original comes with a low gauge number, which is too thick for a low consumer. With a little bit of effort it's possible to do the job, but I think it will be much nicer to supply the relay with the necessary contacts only, letting the customer to decide what wire gauge is fit for a specific job. Great value for the money. Prompt delivery.
