These hanging brackets are not made of high carbon steel. So what??? IF installed correctly they are great! I say that because I read several negative reviews that criticized them because there wasn't enough room for a screw head to slide underneath them. The people who wrote those reviews did not understand how they are to be used.
To properly install them you do need a router. Build a simple jig that frames the bracket, with a lip that will rest against the top edge of your plaque, and clamp it to the back of the plaque. Use a 1/2" long by 1/2" diameter straight bit with a pilot bearing to route a channel slightly deeper than the thickness of the bracket. Place the bracket into the channel, then trace the outline of the keyhole onto the bottom of the channel. Remove the bracket, and with a drill press and a 1/2" Forstner bit, counter bore the channel below the keyhole deep enough for the head of a screw to slide back and forth beneath the bracket. Replace the bracket into the channel with the narrow end of the keyhole at the top end of the plaque, pre-drill pilot holes for the mounting screws and secure the bracket with two screws. If you are trying to hang something that needs the support of a hanging bracket like this, and do not have a router or drill press, use another method to hang the plaque. When installed properly, these brackets will hold a lot of weight, and look very professional. All for less than $3.00 a set. What more can you ask?
Oh yeah, one last thing...the mounting screws they provide are 7/8" long. Most things you will hang will be made from 1" dimensioned lumber, meaning it will be 3/4" thick. After recessing the brackets into the wood, you will need screws that are 1/2" long. Buy #6 flathead screws for mounting. #4's will work, but #6's will give you more strength.
